We have an immediate opportunity for a Mental Health Tech.

General Summary: The Mental Health Technician (MHT) assists the Behavioral Health Nursing Department in the care of patients. The MHT ensures a safe and therapeutic environment for patients in all clinical areas. The MHT ensures that East End Behavioral Health (EEBHH) Hospital’s philosophy, standards, policies, and procedures are met and maintained in a professional manner. The MHT is actively involved in department activities, transdisciplinary team activities, and EEBHH activities to ensure individualized, patient- centered health care for all patient populations admitted to East End Behavior Health Hospital.

Patient Population: Has contact with patients in a clinical setting; understands and demonstrates appropriate behavior when interacting with patients in the adult (18-65 years of age) and geriatric (65 and older) populations.

Essential Functions:

  • Actively maintains a safe and therapeutic clinical environment.
  • Always ensures patient safety by conducting unit safety rounds and patient observation checks.
  • Always ensures patient safety by notifying the assigned nurse, or nursing supervisor, of any risk factors seen, initiating, and maintaining appropriate safety measures. Responds appropriately and assists others in emergency situations in a calm and effective manner, engaging in verbal de-escalation techniques, restraints, and seclusion events.
  • Works in collaboration with all clinical departments to maintain the milieu.
  • Provides patient care under the direction of the behavioral nursing staff in a competent and proficient manner. Assists nurses in identifying and responding to patient needs during rounds (e.g., personal needs, safety needs, etc.)
  • Communicates patient status and changes in patient condition to the nurse and next shift for continuity of care.
  • Accurately completes and documents assignments (e.g., vital signs, blood glucose, meals, intake/output, etc.)
  • Collects specimens as directed using appropriate equipment for collecting and handling specimens.
  • Provides supplemental patient groups and activities as directed.
  • Performs initial safety screening of new admissions and visitors.
  • Conducts thorough searches of belongings and stores remainder of patient’s personal items in the patient’s belongings room.
  • Plans/organizes work for assigned shift to properly utilize time, resources, and supplies to ensure patient receives appropriate quality care.
  • Maintains equipment; ensuring equipment is clean and in working order; assures supplies are adequate.
  • The knowledge and skills necessary to perform the position requirements are demonstrated through the successful completion of competencies established for the position, to include population served and other special needs of patients or customers, served by the department.
  • Adheres to company policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are required.

Requirements

Experience: Six to twelve months of experience in an acute clinical setting or behavioral health is preferred. Experience with crisis intervention and de-escalation is preferred.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Associate degree in psychology, criminal justice, or related field preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Current BLS certification is required. Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCM) certification is required within 30 days of hire. All MHTs must maintain current BLS and CCM certification while employed with East End Behavioral Health Hospitals.
