Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician
Location: North Providence, RI
Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Technician to perform laboratory tests and procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Medical Laboratory Technician will be responsible for collecting and analyzing samples, interpreting test results, and maintaining accurate records. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of laboratory procedures, equipment, and safety protocols, as well as excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect, prepare, and analyze laboratory specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples.
- Perform routine and complex laboratory tests and procedures, such as hematology, microbiology, immunology, and chemistry tests.
- Interpret test results and report findings to physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Maintain accurate records of laboratory tests and procedures.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, ensuring they are clean, calibrated, and in good working condition.
- Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and infection control procedures.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Communicate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers regarding laboratory results and patient care.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and laboratory accreditation programs.
- Stay current with new and emerging laboratory technologies and procedures.
Requirements:
- Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field.
- Current licensure or certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician in the state of practice.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Strong understanding of laboratory procedures, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Ability to perform routine and complex laboratory tests and procedures.
- Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic health records.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other relevant certification.
- Experience with molecular diagnostics or genetics testing.
- Familiarity with laboratory accreditation standards and quality control procedures.
Physical Demands:
This position requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, to lift and move laboratory equipment and supplies, and to perform other physically demanding tasks. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Working Conditions:
This position requires working in a laboratory setting, where exposure to infectious agents and hazardous materials is possible. The Medical Laboratory Technician may also be required to work evening or weekend shifts, depending on the needs of the facility.
