Medical Billing Specialist (Medical Coding/Alberta)

Responsible for ensuring accurate billing for timely submission of claims, monitoring claim status, investigating claim denials/rejections, and documenting related account activities

Major/Essential Functions

Process weekly Hospital based service reports. In Athena IDX, this may include registering new accounts, updating established accounts, creating visits, identifying auth numbers, and verifying insurance eligibility
Process daily queries on portals to identify hospital-based services for billing
Process ETM tasks by verifying benefits, updating account information, correcting edits, performing follow-up on unpaid claims, billing of re-billing claims to appropriate payer source, and appealing denied claims
On rotating schedule, collect billing documents from various hospital and/or clinical operations
Print and mail Ceequence appeals saved on MPIP SharePoint
Other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Manager

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
Minimum 6 mos. experience with medical coding and/or billing
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding and/or experience with CMS regulations/industry standards
Demonstrated knowledge of CPT, ICD-9/10 codes and HCFA 1500
Licensure/Certification
Work experience in a physician's clinical office or healthcare facility with knowledge of inpatient and outpatient medical coding processing, OR completed a medical coding program
Understanding and utilization of the medical coding code set, CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS
Knowledge of medical terminology
Ability to adhere to a coding rotation schedule for TTUHSC Medical Coding SOM
Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) programs
Knowledge of healthcare Federal and State regulations for coding and reimbursement, i.e., HIPAA, etc.
Proficient communication skills to query physicians and other healthcare providers

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with coding in an academic teaching setting for medical coding in medical multi-specialties
Proficient knowledge of medical terminology
Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) G.E EMR and Cerner EMR systems
Knowledge of G.E. Centricity application
Skilled in CPT, ICD 10 and HCPCS coding
Experience with working and refiling claim denials
Ability to use computerized systems, and medical business programs, telephone and general office equipment
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Good communications skills to query physicians and other healthcare providers
Bilingual English and Spanish
