Summary
The Medical Assistant/Lab Assistant communicates with patients and performs clinical services to ensure high quality patient care in a fast-paced environment. Example duties include, but are not limited to:
- Taking patient vital signs and obtaining patient intake information.

Draws blood from patients or donors for analysis or other medical purposes by performing the following duties.
- Performing clinical procedures such as blood draws, vaccinations, nebulizer treatments, ear lavages, or EKGs.
- Effectively communicating with patients to determine their needs and providing education and resources.
- Assemble equipment such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collections devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Verify or record identity of patient or donor and converse with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
- Apply tourniquet to arm, locate accessible vein, swab puncture area with antiseptic and inserts needles into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
- Withdraw needle, apply treatment to puncture site and label and store blood container for subsequent processing.
- Prick finger to draw blood.
- Ensuring exam rooms are stocked, clean, and set up for examinations and procedures.
- Coordinating Provider’s workflow to ensure efficient patient care.
- Ensuring Provider has all pertinent information required for each patient visit including diagnostic images, labs, and required screenings.
- Conveying information to patient via telephone or email under the direction of a Provider or Registered Nurse.
- Providing patients with requested documents after review to ensure forms are complete, accurate, and executed by the Provider.
- Maintaining a professional working relationship with all levels of staff, clients, and the public.
- Following all safety procedures as outlined in Neighborhood Healthcare’s Illness and Injury Prevention Plan (IIPP) and reporting any injuries and/or unsafe conditions immediately.
Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Valid MA certificate from an accredited program required. Phlebotomy training via Medical Assistant schooling or Phlebotomy schooling required. Active BLS/CPR certificate required.
Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience required.
Skills: Knowledge of and familiar with medical procedures and terminology. Electronic health records system experience preferred. Intermediate computer and data entry skills required. Ability to be flexible with changing priorities and multiple time sensitive deadlines. Ability to use emotional and cultural intelligence to provide appropriate communication and patient care. Exemplify compassion to patients and team members.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Additional Requirements: Must have own watch with a second hand to count the pulse rate per minute and the respiratory rate per minute. Must wear the watch at all times while working.
Neighborhood Healthcare requires employees to be fully vaccinated (including a booster dose) against COVID-19 and demonstrate proof of vaccination/booster upon hire or receive approval for an exemption based on a medical reason, disability or religious belief. Proof of booster dose will be contingent upon booster eligibility.
Pay range: $19.00 - $27.50, depending on experience.
