What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a creative, motivated manager (job title: Manager, R&D Science & Engineering) for the W80-4 System Engineering department (8245). This manager will lead one of nine System Engineering departments for the W80-4 Life Extension Program, which spans both the CA and New Mexico sites and is the largest program currently underway at Sandia.
The W80-4 Program recently entered Phase 6.4, Production Engineering Phase. As the program moves into the production phase with a realigned schedule, strong partnership with both other program leadership and our NSE partners will be essential to the success of the W80-4 Program.
The 8245 department has responsibility for some non-WR W80-4 System products, as well as coordinating work with partner Product Realization Teams (PRTs). The 8245 Manager will represent Sandia and these products/PRTs to key partners and to NNSA, also serving as an Integrated Product Team (IPT) representative for Sandia. The 8245 Manager will be an integral member of the distributed W80-4 System Management Team and will have both program and line responsibilities.
The manager will partner with other W80-4 system managers to provide leadership for the W80-4 system team and the overall W80-4 life extension program (LEP). The W80-4 LEP requires support from many organizations within Sandia across both the CA and NM sites. Additionally, this program requires close collaboration with many outside organizations including the United States Air Force (USAF), National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Pantex.
The new manager will share responsibility for hiring, training, and mentoring staff to support the program. The manager will also share responsibility for implementing a strong foundational project management structure and pursuing key strategic objectives while executing the program. The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills in systems engineering and partnership building, both of which are crucial for leading this multi-site and multi-agency program. Immediate knowledge of the W80-4 LEP is not required, but the candidate must have the willingness and ability to develop that knowledge in a timely manner.
On any given day, you may be called to:
- Oversee and provide leadership to system engineering activities for non-WR products, ensuring successful execution and providing appropriate oversight and review of engineering activities
- Provide systems management leadership for Product Realization Teams (PRTs), providing strong communication and assisting partners in resolving issues, building strong relationships with the Production Agencies, enabling successful, on-time execution of PRTs
- Represent Sandia on the Integrated Product Team, working closely with the NNSA IPT Lead, as well as other IPT members across the NSE
- Provide oversight, mentorship, and leadership to Weapon System Engineers
- Actively manage technical and programmatic risks and issues
- Partner with the NNSA, LLNL, USAF, and the Production Agencies to address programmatic and technical issues
- Provide program briefings to various levels of management and program partners, clearly communicating program risks, issues, successes, and status
- Support the staff, including identifying and securing assignments and resources, and providing technical and programmatic assistance for project execution
- Work with staff to identify career development goals, and work to develop assignments that match those goals with business needs and a sustainable work-life balance
- Participate in efforts to recruit, train, and mentor new engineers to support the W80-4 LEP. Actively support a continuous hiring process by interviewing candidates and hiring to meet program needs.
- Represent current and future W80-4 needs in strategic planning and workforce development
- Review and approve technical reports and program plans
- Support and facilitate joint SNL/KCNSC Tier meetings
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.
