SCHUYLKILL COUNTY
JOB TITLE: Maintenance Worker
DEPARTMENT: Prison
GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision, perform building maintenance and repair tasks; inspect, diagnose and correct problems with boiler system, electrical or mechanical systems, plumbing, lighting, masonry and locks; perform preventive maintenance checks; order and perform inventory or supplies and materials; assist and supervise inmates in routine maintenance tasks; perform grounds maintenance and repair tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Receive written orders or verbal instructions from Prison Warden, Deputy Warden or Shift Supervisor; follow up on problems detected in course of work; update records and maintenance logs; prepare reports on problems and recommend course of action; confer with Director of Public Works to coordinate large projects or secure funding.
2. Inspect, diagnose and correct problems with boiler system operations, electrical or mechanical systems, plumbing, lighting, masonry and locks; clean and repair air conditioning units, air and heat exchange units and kitchen freezers etc.
3. Perform preventive maintenance checks according to established schedule; check boiler room for compliance with operational standards, e.g. check pumps, motors and gauges, remove and replace ash buckets, shovel coal over vertical conveyor; clean boiler room area; check push pads, communication system and panel lights in control room; check locked doors and sliders.
4. Order maintenance supplies; receive and verify orders; update inventory records, distribute tools and supplies; organize shop area, supplies and tools; ensure proper security of tools in storage and while on-the-job.
5. Assist and supervise inmates in performance of routine maintenance tasks, e.g. painting.
6. Perform grounds maintenance and repair tasks; cut grass, repair fence and locks, etc.

Education/Employment:
Any combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below. An example of acceptable qualifications for this position is completion of high school degree or the equivalent, additional coursework and certification in a trades field, and general maintenance and repair experience.

Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of safety standards, practices and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of routine plumbing, electrical, masonry and mechanical repair practices and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of department security policy and procedure.
Advanced knowledge inspection practices and procedures.
Skills:
Use of hand and power tools, e.g. electrical drill, jig saw, grinder and sewer auger.
Abilities:
Ability to properly diagnose routine mechanical or electrical problems and recommend course of action.
Ability to interpret technical manuals and schematics.
Ability to prepare accurate records.
Ability to recognize potentially hazardous or threatening situations and take appropriate action.
Ability to adhere to strict safety and security guidelines.
Ability to demonstrate physical fitness to include standing for extended periods of time, lift light to medium weight materials (up to 50 lbs) bending, squatting, reaching, repetitive movements with hand tools, and pushing or pulling.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed alone and involves frequent exposure to hazardous substances and risk to personal safety. Adherence to safety standards and practices as well as security procedures, controls for most risk. Work frequent involves responding to angry or upset individuals.
