Job description
Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division is looking for a Maintenance Technician (Engineered Systems Tec Level 4 or 5). As a member of the PF-PROD Equipment Maintenance team, this position will provide machine system life cycle support to machine tools located in nine machine shops within Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division used for precision fabrication. Mission areas include preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) for PF machine shops as well as occasionally deploying these services to other Laboratory organizations and programs as needed to achieve institutional success. The technician will also perform new machine installations, upgrades and retrofits, as well as maintaining advanced technology for on-machine measurements of cutting tools and part geometry.
This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineered Systems Tec 4 $67,800 - $107,700
- Performing PM and CM work on a variety of conventional and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools, to include both newly acquired and legacy equipment that may no longer be supported by the equipment manufacturer.
- Provide mechanical repair, electronic diagnostics hydraulic and pneumatic systems troubleshooting, as well as advanced geometry evaluation of machine tools to determine means of re-alignment.
- Read and interpret machine tool drawings, diagrams and schematics to enable understanding of machine tool subsystem functions and how they integrate into overall performance.
Engineered Systems Tec 5 $75,100 - $119,200
- Demonstrated advanced ability to read and interpret AC & DC electronic schematics and utilize this knowledge to troubleshoot and repair electro-mechanical systems.
- Expert knowledge and experience troubleshooting and repairing electro-mechanical systems.
- Demonstrated ability to be a technical leader within the organization, including training and mentoring other employees.

Maintenance Knowledge:
You will have advanced knowledge and experience in performing preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on a variety of machine tools such as conventional and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools, to include both newly acquired and legacy equipment that may no longer be supported by the equipment manufacturer. You will perform complex installation, maintenance, and repairs on equipment and systems and must have the ability to apply a variety of methods, procedures, and techniques to lay out, install, align, repair, overhaul, and maintain various types of machinery, equipment and/or systems. At this level, you may be responsible for the development, hazard analysis, and implementation of safe and secure work practices.
Systems Support:
You will develop solutions for electrical and mechanical systems of broad scope and complexity. You must have the ability to independently troubleshoot and diagnose machine tools to pinpoint needed repairs for components and subsystems with special emphasis on machine tools such as CNC and conventional lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, EDMs, lasers, CMMs and inspection-related equipment. This will involve in-depth mechanical repair, electronic diagnostics as well as advanced geometry evaluation of machine tools to determine means of re-alignment.
Schematics:
Advanced ability to read and interpret machine tool drawings, diagrams and schematics to enable understanding of machine tool subsystem functions and how they integrate into overall performance.
Customer Support & Team Dynamics:
Demonstrated experience interfacing with customers, suppliers, and commercial technical specialists with emphasis in CNC and conventional machine tools. You will work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment that includes scientist, engineers, machinist, and other technicians. Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.
Clearance:
You must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally required US citizenship.
Training/Certifications: You must have the ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as: Radiological Worker II; Beryllium Worker; forklift operator; crane operator; and others that may apply.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 5:
- Candidate must have expert knowledge and experience in performing preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on a variety of machine tools such as conventional and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools, to include both newly acquired and legacy equipment that may no longer be supported by the equipment manufacturer.
- You must be a subject matter expert in troubleshooting and diagnosis of failures and malfunctions for complex machine tools which will require you to have in-depth knowledge for mechanical repair and electrical diagnostics.
- Expert level ability to read and interpret AC & DC electronic schematics.
- Demonstrated experience leading individual teams to accomplish a task or project.
- You must have the ability to acquire and maintain certification as a LANL Energized Electrical Worker.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate's Degree in a related field and 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.
Desired Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic mechanical systems troubleshooting and repair.
- Working knowledge of HVAC as applied to machine tools, such as spindle and hydraulic chillers, etc.
- Factory certified technician training for platforms typically utilized in a prototype machining environment: Mazak, HAAS, Hurco, etc.
Work Environment: Working overtime or irregular schedule, operation of specialized heavy equipment, operation of motor vehicles, work in a noisy environment, work near electrical power supplies, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work with weapons or explosives, work with vibrating equipment/machinery, work near machinery with moving parts, irritant chemicals, dusts or powders, sprays, mists, or vapors, fumes, headgear or head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, face shield or facial protection, mask or respirator, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective footgear
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.
