Linux Systems Administrator

Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) in the Business Services Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). They are seeking qualified applicants for a Linux Systems Administrator position in the Research and Development Systems Engineering group. The R&D Systems Engineering group exists to facilitate lab goals through systems engineering, integration, and support for the research community at ORNL. The group runs mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other services where science happens at the lab.

This is a full-time, permanent position located in Oak Ridge, TN. Relocation may be required.

Job Responsibilities:
- Support deployment, monitoring, and management for Linux-based ORNL research projects: install, configure, and troubleshoot Linux Server systems & provide advanced Linux Support as needed.
- Build out both physical and virtual systems.
- Engineer and provide consultation for custom system solutions.
- Work with Developers to maintain customer applications
- Ensure the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems
- Scripting using standard tools
- Utilize automation and monitoring solutions to minimize day-to-day maintenance to optimize system management practices or system performance.
- Assist with storage and archiving activities
- Ensure Backups are completed and assist in any recoveries if needed.
- Provide technical consulting in the selection and purchase of hardware and software systems, and evaluate new technology options and vendor products
- Collaborate with research teams to ensure new environments meet requirements
- Ensure the secure and effective operation of Linux computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
- Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
- Answer escalated user needs in addition to primary project work.
- Perform system upgrades and Monitor systems performance.
- Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages.
- Document all required work as required
- Off hours support may be required.
- Work with local bargaining unit personnel on hardware installation and hardware repairs where it is outside the scope of a vendor.
- Install, configure, and maintain system software, both commercial packages and various freely available software (including Apache, MySQL, Postgres, PHP, ZFS, etc.).
- Patch both system and 3rd party vendor software to ensure security and stability. Monitor for patch releases and work with the customers and other admins to ensure the patches are applied in a timely manner.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science (or related field) or combined work experience plus education of 5 years.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems.
- A minimum of 2 years utilizing configuration management and automation tools such as Git, Jenkins, Ansible, or Puppet.
- Moderate fluency in at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, or equivalent.
- Experience performing advanced troubleshooting and system administration with Linux Servers.
- Experience supporting large storage systems.
- Demonstrated capabilities to work in a dynamic environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.

- The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is required. This requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of multiple operating systems.
- Experience with Centos/RHEL, Ubuntu, VMware
- Understanding of platforms to support users with job submissions and troubleshooting.
- Experience building and running containerized applications in a Linux environment.
- Experience managing systems utilizing GPU/Cuda clusters for AI/ML and/or image processing.
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, traffic analysis, common protocols, and network diagnostics.
- Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
- Experience with Grafana, CheckMK, Nagios, SolarWinds, Ganglia, or other network and device monitoring systems.
- Some experience with (or desire to learn) Windows and MacOS environments
- Previous experience working in a government, scientific or other highly technical environment.
- Good documentation skills, including ability to prepare simple documentation web pages.
