TITLE: Lifeguard
STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Program Director(s)/Manager(s)
REPORTING STAFF: None
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Program Director(s)/Manager(s), the Lifeguard is responsible for the water safety of the children and families of Maryvale in and around the pool.
Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday 1-5:30pm and Saturday 1-4pm
Payrate: $17.00 - $19.00
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Demonstrate a passion and commitment for the Mission and Vincentian Core Values of Maryvale and the Daughters of Charity.
2. Create an atmosphere of enthusiasm and energetic commitment and serve as a role model in carrying out the Mission.
3. Promote and support the attitudes, behaviors, knowledge and skills necessary to work respectfully and effectively with each other as well as demonstrate the ability to address the needs of the children and families Maryvale serves.
4. Follow the Trauma Informed Care philosophy when supporting and addressing the needs of the children and families Maryvale serves.
5. Utilize Trauma Informed Care approach in recognizing the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledge the role that trauma has played in the lives of the clients/residents.
6. Follow Universal Precautions when exposed to blood and body fluids.
7. Follow Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) regulations pertaining to safety and the use of equipment/machinery.
8. Must be an advanced swimmer.
9. Works directly with children and families to insure safety of swimming activities.
10. Performs standard lifeguard/instructor duties.
11. Rescues swimmers in distress and administers first aid, artificial respiration, and CPR, if necessary.
12. Responds to life-threatening situations.
13. Prevent and/or intervene in pool related physical crisis situations.
14. Calls for assistance from Maryvale staff.
15. Uses sound judgment to facilitate problem solving.
16. Enforces pool rules and maintains agency rules and regulations in pool area.
17. Maintains equipment and safeguards area.
18. Locks up pool area and equipment upon leaving area.
19. Communicates pertinent information regarding children to the Program Director(s)/Manager(s).
20. Asses children’s levels of ability to swim and communicates to the Program Director(s)/Manager(s).
21. Provide supervision and serves as an active role model for the children.
22. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. American Red Cross Advance Lifesaving Certificate, or equivalent.
2. American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate, or equivalent.
3. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate, or equivalent desirable.
4. Previous work with children, desirable.
5. In-depth knowledge of pool operations and lifeguarding and the ability to tactfully and diplomatically deal with the children and staff.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. While performing the duties of this job, the associate is constantly required to climb into lifeguard stanchions, climb in and out of the swimming pool (with or without the use of pool ladders), and to walk up and down stairs. The associate is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects or equipment; stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear, and taste or smell.
2. Ability to lift 50+ lbs & transfer, with assistance when necessary.
3. Associate performs most activities outdoors in an aquatic setting. Associate will be exposed to outside weather conditions throughout the summer.
