To perform routine paraprofessional library work involving service to patrons, or collection and records maintenance, or bibliographic searching and verification; perform related work.
The successful candidate will perform routine paraprofessional library work involving service to patrons, or collection and records maintenance, or bibliographic searching and verification at the Eli M. Oboler Library on the Pocatello campus of Idaho State University. May supervise during nights and/or weekends in absence of Circulation Manager; perform related work.
Library services.
- Questions patrons to determine information needs
- Responds to basic reference requests and inquiries
- Provides basic direction and instructs patrons in locating materials and use of collections and computer catalogs, indexes, and a variety of library equipment
- Performs basic searching involving use of computer terminals and standard bibliographic sources in computerized, microform or printed format
- May review records and verify accuracy of bibliographic information to be entered into databases and on-line systems
- Corrects errors and uses computer to enter or retrieve a variety of data
- Supervises maintenance of files and library catalogs
- Inventories collection and searches for missing materials
- Organizes and shelves materials
- Collects and compiles a variety of data and produces a variety of statistical reports
- Identifies and recommends library materials for mending, binding, relabeling or replacement
- May authorize billing of patrons for missing or damaged books
- May prepare/compose correspondence
- May hire, train and supervise others involved in basic library work
- May schedule, assign and evaluate work
- May maintain training and procedures manual
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
1) Assists in performance of duties associated with circulation functions
- Interviews/responds to patron information needs.
- Provides reference assistance for patrons, participates in online reference chat.
- Interprets and applies library and university policies and procedures.
- Resolves patron problems and complaints.
- Reviews search, hold and recall requests, assigns special status in database.
- May assign student projects, monitors work, assists in training.
2) Performs stacks management duties.
- Assesses shelf space needs, suggest areas for adjustment to accommodate material.
- Recommends additional shelving needs.
- Leads and directs shelving assembly.
- Leads shifting efforts.
3) Performs duties associated with reserve functions.
- Creates and maintains bibliographic records for reserve materials not held in collection and incorporates all reserve items into integrated library system (ILS).
- Assigns professor/class status, establish call number sequence and reserve designation in coordination with faculty member.
- Ensures copyright compliance for reserve materials.
- Maintains reserve statistics.
- Processes on and off-campus book deliveries, maintains statistics.
4) Performs other duties as assigned.

Some knowledge of: library terminology and functions.
Experience: locating library materials using a library catalog and classification scheme; using and applying basic library reference sources including indexes, almanacs and other common bibliographic sources; filing alphabetically, numerically, or chronologically; applying computer application software.
Incumbents in this class assist higher-level library assistants or professional librarians by performing paraprofessional library duties in patron or technical library services.
