The Hoover Institution Library & Archives connects a vibrant community of scholars and the broader public to a special collection of one million volumes and more than six thousand archival collections documenting war, revolution, and peace in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through an active reading room and dynamic exhibitions. The Hoover Institution Library & Archives is seeking a Library & Archives Assistant with a flexible schedule to support forward-facing operations, namely the Reading Room and Hoover Tower front of house. This position is fully onsite. With the increasing demand for services and fluctuating staff availability, we are seeking a Library & Archives Assistant with a flexible schedule who can be fully trained and ready to work where and when needed throughout the week (including weekends). This role is a great opportunity for someone interested in learning more about libraries and archives, but may not have the schedule to commit to full-time work. Ideal candidates will have experience working in a library, archives, or museum; recent customer service experience; and/or be currently or recently enrolled in a graduate program in archival studies, library sciences, museum studies, history, or a related field.
Assistants must commit to work at least 30-40 hours per paid period between 9:30am-4:30pm, Monday-Sunday. You may be asked to work additional shifts depending on staffing needs, with 24 hours notice.

Job duties:
Reading Room and Circulation
Assist with staffing the Library & Archives circulation desk, helping patrons with their requests in our electronic circulation system (Aeon), retrieving and reshelving materials, and assessing and barcoding collection material according to specified criteria.
Hoover Tower Exhibits Gallery
Assist with staffing the Hoover Tower front of house, welcome visitors to the exhibition galleries, provide tours and answer questions related to the exhibitions on display, and maintain cleanliness in the galleries.
Additional tasks may include helping to monitor and enforce policies in the reading room and exhibition galleries, remote reference digitization, assisting with preservation review, and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications & Physical Requirements:
- Responsible, organized, punctual, conscientious, detail-oriented, and committed to the care of historical documents
- Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to work in a team as well as independently
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, organize and prioritize work, and act with initiative, good judgment, and problem-solving skills
- Effective at meeting deadlines, adjusting priorities, and working on multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience with organizational office software, including Excel and databases
- Excellent customer service and public speaking skills
- Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, and sort/file paperwork or parts, reach/work above shoulders, and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds
- Ability to lift 40-pound boxes and to push and maneuver fully loaded book trucks (push force up to 50 pounds)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a library, archives, or museum; recent customer service experience; and/or be currently or recently enrolled in a graduate program in archival studies, library sciences, museum studies, history, or a related field
- Knowledge of and/or interest in 20th and 21st century history and current events
- Prior front desk experience and/or experience working in a museum, library, or archival setting
- Reading knowledge of a foreign language, preferably German, Russian, Polish, Chinese, French, Spanish, Japanese, or Arabic
The expected pay range for this position is $22.00 to $25.00 per hour. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
