JOB DESCRIPTION
General Statement of Duties
Under the general supervision of the Golf Course Manager, the Golf Course Landscaping Superintendent is responsible for the landscape maintenance, as well as continuous improvements to the golf course. Incumbent must possess a thorough working knowledge of turf grass management, and landscape maintenance responsibilities such as proper mowing procedures, irrigation, drainage, soil science, landscaping, fertilization, and herbicide and pesticide control methods. Incumbent will perform a variety of supervisory and skilled tasks in the operation to include, managing and supervising assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources. Other responsibilities include possessing exceptional public relation skills, must be capable of supervising up to ten employee crew and have the administrative ability, especially critical in problem solving and decision making. Has the ability to perform a required role in emergency situations.

Essential Functions
The landscaping superintendent's duties include the following:
~ Supervises and coordinates activities with landscape maintenance staff.
~ Plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments.
~ Trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.
~ Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
~ Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
~ Inspects course regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.
~ Trains subordinates in various areas related to landscape maintenance.
~ Inspects work performed to ensure conformance to specifications and established standards.
~ Responsible for scheduling staff.
~ Supervises the use and care of equipment and hand tools used.
~ Oversees the planning, cultivation, trimming, care and treatment of trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns.
~ Requisitions supplies, makes recommendations for the purchase of additional equipment or replacements, and prepares necessary records and reports.
~ Selects, prepares, and applies proper fertilizers/insecticides/herbicides/nutrients for the grounds in accordance with Pesticide Application License and recommendations.
~ Communicates and reports any needs or problems relating to course equipment and irrigation.
~ Getting members of a group to work together to accomplish tasks:
~ Providing guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
~ Estimating sizes, distances, and quantities; or determining time, costs, resources, or materials needed to perform a work activity.
~ Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person; and
~ Performs other work as assigned.

Physical Demands
Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax. Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, reaching, crawling, and handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling. Must lift light to medium duty landscaping equipment and tools such as weed trimmers, push mowers, riding mowers, chain saws, edgers, blowers, construction tools, hand tools, power tools, and must be capable of operating 15 to 30 horsepower tractors. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to fifty pounds. The landscaping superintendent works outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions. The job has medium hazards associated with working with equipment and the physical demands are high.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
~ Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma and vocational training in the golf course and landscape maintenance.
~ Three (3) years of supervisory experience in golf course and landscaping maintenance, as well as basic irrigation principles. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
~ Possession of a valid, appropriate Texas (Class C) driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Pre¬-employment drug screen and physical required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge - Knowledge of landscaping equipment and tools, uses, repair, and maintenance. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods. Knowledge of the structure and the content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Knowledge of the use of the following computer software: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Skills - Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed. Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools. Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Managing one's own time and the time of others. Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. Talking to others to convey information effectively.

Abilities - Ability to supervise and evaluate staff and activities. Must have the ability to use hand tools and power tools associated with landscape work. The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking and in writing so others will understand. The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Ability to assemble information from more than one source and maintain records of same in efficient filing system. Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with public, public officials and fellow employees. Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform a variety of moderate to heavy tasks in the care and limited maintenance of landscaping equipment. The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and legs.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time exempt position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Incumbent must have the ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and some weekends. Special events participation may be occasionally required.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position supervises the Assistant Landscaping Superintendent, Foreman, Groundskeepers, Equipment Mechanic, and Maintenance Area.
