Summary
Maintains, coordinates, and monitors daily operations of Chemistry and Physical Science laboratories of the Natural Sciences Department of Western New Mexico University.
Duties
- Teaches 6 laboratories sections in support of associated Chemistry, and Forensics Science classes.
- Teaches, trains, and demonstrates laboratory protocols and methods, proper use of equipment and machinery, and appropriate safety procedures.
- Sets up and takes down laboratories experiments for General Chemistry, Introduction to Chemistry, and Forensic Science classes. Prepares, maintains, and purchases all materials, supplies, and equipment for delivery of relevant laboratory experiences in support of Chemistry classes including General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry labs.
- Ensures that functional teaching lab equipment is available for scheduled undergraduate classes, including performing performance checks, preventative maintenance, and repairs.
- Ensures safety equipment is functional (e.g. eye wash stations, fume hoods) and maintains personal protective equipment (PPE) inventories (gloves, eye protection, lab coats, spill kits, fire extinguishers, etc.)
- May present lectures when chemistry faculty members are absent, when needed, or as appropriate.
- Establishes, monitors, and modifies work schedules and assignments of work-study students and graduate assistants working within the Chemistry/Physical Science discipline.
- Implements, monitors, and maintains chemical inventory database and permits necessary for use of MSDS for hazardous materials. Maintains the chemical warehouse and inventory needed for classroom and research instruction (i.e. keep chemistry lab rooms and storage rooms organized and stocked).
- Coordinates the appropriate purchase of chemicals required for classroom use and appropriate waste management and disposal. Coordinates with department faculty regarding Chemistry labs, including instruction, purchasing, inventory maintenance and waste management.
- Provides professional contributions within areas of expertise as appropriate. Participates in departmental and University committees and special projects.
- Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with WNMU personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Background
Master’s degree in Chemistry required. MSDS knowledge and experience required. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Job Knowledge
General laboratory skills including solution preparation, operation of lab equipment. Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures associated with using a variety of chemical supplies and equipment. Knowledge of the proper measurement of chemical supplies. Skills in coordinating inventory of supplies and/or resources including disbursing. Knowledge and experience with PPE needed for handling, storing, and managing chemicals. Teaching experience is highly valued. Must be knowledgeable of university policies and procedures. Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
Normal classroom and laboratory environment. Laboratory environments include chemicals, biological samples, strong smells, corrosives, and other substances that require knowledge and handling of dangerous materials. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Ability to ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps in different internal and external sites. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting. Must be able to follow all safety protocols. Work involves exposure to chemicals and unpleasant odors or fumes. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
