The Laboratory Technician (Lab Tech) is responsible for performing analyses on new feed streams and ensuring quoted quality levels are met on each run at each stage of the process. The Lab Tech is also responsible for working with others to maintain a high-quality product that meets minimum standards set forth by the company to meet the customers’ needs.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions
Essential functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform lab analysis in support of identifying new plastic feed streams (type, description, color, density, gravity and percent of contaminates) using FTIR and density analysis and thoroughly document results in customer development folders.
  • Provide QC support (sample retains, contamination analysis, QC data input and production feedback) to achieve maximum product quality and assure minimal field quality complaints.
  • Sample and evaluate inbound material from receiving, as required.
  • Assist in running trial material on select systems.
  • Perform incoming inspection of inbound materials for evaluation.
  • Coordinate the flow of information between production and lab personnel to assure all information required of a run is being adhered to and provided per the needs of each specific run number.
  • Where required, alert company personnel that directives are not being adhered to.
  • Work with supervisors on a daily basis to share relevant information that may occur on each shift to better understand problems and solutions required of each run being produced.
  • Understand, follow and apply information from the Run Instruction Sheet (RIS).
  • Keep work area clean and organized throughout the shift.
  • Coordinate special projects in support of new business development and document all trial results in special project folders.
  • Regularly audit and ensure production associates are using clean boxes, liners and skids.
  • Monitor inventory levels of chemicals and equipment and work with purchasing to obtain proper supplies.
  • Oversee and maintain the storage of production run sample area.
  • Manage lab inventory of XP and sample retains.
  • Calibrate scales, complete calibration log and report inequities to supervisor.
  • Populate Excel documents with pertinent information concerning density and moisture levels.
  • Assist with training new associates.
  • Participate in shift meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist Shipping/Receiving with auditing warehouse material for quality and inventory, sampling inventory and purging material.
  • Crosstrain to assist and fill in for Scale Master position for breaks and time off.
  • Calibrate the MD to assure it meets programmed quality settings.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Not applicable but must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Must work closely with production personnel and supervisors to ensure proper procedures are followed and quality levels are being met.
  • Has some authority to make final quality decisions.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED and at least one (1) years experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have the capacity for making mathematical computations with adding, subtracting and calculating percentages.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate with others regarding pertinent information and issues on each job.
  • Ability to legibly complete paperwork.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Strong ability to methodically work through issues, problems and opportunities to ensure proper production and quality control measures are being followed.
  • Above average ability to understand issues and problems and walk through steps to troubleshoot.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to compute percentages and quality levels.
  • Ability to ascertain the gross, tare and net weights of each box of material processed.

TECHNICAL/COMPUTER SKILLS

  • Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel and e-mail systems.
  • Proficient in operating the Carver Press, FTIR, moisture analyzer, Mettler scale and UV-VIS equipment.
  • Proficient in operating machines, forklift, man lift and Tennant and become certified on such machines.
  • Proficient use of beakers to obtain required information and specific gravity readings.
  • Verify and maintain lab equipment is correctly calibrated.
  • Ability to use an adding machine and calculator.

  • This position requires good communication skills and the ability to express oneself clearly.
  • This position requires the ability to perform focused work with close attention to detail.

  • This work takes place in a production environment and in an office/laboratory environment.
  • This position requires working with dirt/dust and noise. Use of eye and ear protection is required throughout the entire shift.
  • This position requires working with various temperature conditions.
  • This position requires use of mechanical and electrical equipment, and moving objects.
  • This position requires work on platforms, climbing stairs and ladders, being off the ground and under equipment.
  • This work is fast-paced and deadline-oriented and requires flexibility within the work day.
