Summary
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, provides daily oversight for the development of Hospice Aides and their services through telephone support and home visits, mentoring and coordinating schedules, establishing monthly Hospice Aide meetings, and scheduling in-services to meet regulatory educational requirements. Responsible for attending to the daily living and care needs of hospice patients when needed due to staff shortage or absence. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:
High school graduate or equivalent.
TN: Evidence of at least 75 hours of classroom instruction in the provision of basic services including simple procedures, personal care, meeting nutritional needs, ambulation and exercise, and household services essential to hospice care at home.
TN: Successful completion, with passing grade, on the State Home Health Aide Certification and Agency examination.
MS: Previous work experience as Nurse’s Aide or Home Health Aide and/or completion of a special program for Home Health Aide and successful completion, with passing grade, on the Agency examination.
At least two years of Home Health/Hospice Aide experience.
Effective June 1, 2018: New Hires and Transfers are required to have current AHA “Heartsaver” Certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Valid driver’s license and current automobile liability insurance.
- Ability to read and understand directions or navigate a city map.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Tracks the clinical competency of Hospice Aides and mentors through home visits and educational offerings. Assesses and identifies remedial skill needs of Hospice Aides and provides teaching along with the Staff Development Nurse.
- Develops Hospice Aides through guidance, teaching, and coordinating schedules.
- Ensures Aides submit complete and accurate documentation on a weekly basis according to Hospice protocols.
- Directs flow of information between patients, Hospice Aides, and other Hospice team members.
- Demonstrates effective customer relations skills, promotes a positive work environment, and contributes to the overall team effort.
- Maintains personal professional development and assists with orientation of new Aides.
- Directs Hospice Aide staff in maintaining patient confidentiality and demonstrating respect for the patient.
- Understands, applies, and supports Hospice, AHS, and MLH policies, procedures, and standards and participates in departmental and system-wide CIP activities.
- Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, oversees the daily work activities of Hospice Aides to include training, evaluation, disciplinary action and scheduling. Assists in selection of Hospice Aides.
Physical Requirements
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
- Exposure to high levels of noise.
