TUBERCULOSIS CONTROL PROGRAM

The Tuberculosis Control Program is a multifaceted team that:

  • Help clients and their families understand their disease;
  • Make sure clients have a physician and are receiving appropriate care;
  • Make sure clients take all of their medicine;
  • Get the names of friends, family and other individuals the client has been in close contact with so they can be checked for Tuberculosis and offered medicine if needed; and,
  • Assist TB clients with other needs such as referrals for Medi-Cal, housing, food, transportation to medical appointments, and linkages to other services as needed.

TB staff also consults with physicians, schools, hospital nurses, and others in the community on Tuberculosis. Additionally, they monitor the number of TB cases annually and determine other steps to be taken to control Tuberculosis in Alameda County.

The POSITION

Under the direct supervision of the Division of Communicable Disease Control & Prevention/ Tuberculosis (TB) Section Director or Senior Program Specialist, the TB Health Services Trainee is a non-licensed health care worker who supports clinical and clerical duties specific to Tuberculosis Control, requiring the exercise of considerable initiative and judgment. This position requires telephone and in-person interaction with patients and members of the public and daily collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, public health nurses, medical social worker, epidemiologist, and public health investigators.

Distinguishing Features

The Tuberculosis Health Services Trainee (TB HST) performs duties specifically for the TB Section. The incumbent will be required to become familiar with the California Health & Safety Code as it relates to TB, local jurisdiction TB reporting requirements, and state and national Public Health guidelines and time constraints related to management of patients with active TB disease and their contacts. The TB HST is expected to function in a sensitive and highly confidential environment.

Major Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists Public Health Nurses to obtain medical records for patients with Tuberculosis (TB) or latent TB infection (LTBI).
  • Communicates, records, retrieves data, information and documentation pertinent to client’s medical care and status.
  • Assists with the enrollment of individuals into either in-person or electronic Directly Observed Therapy (eDOT) program.
  • Views eDOT videos and communicates any patient-specific concerns, including compliance, to the Public Health Nurse and Senior Program Specialist.
  • As needed, assists with contact investigations that are designed to detect patients with TB or LTBI.
  • As needed, assists Public Health Nurses link patients to care to complete evaluation for TB or LTBI.
  • As needed, performs clerical activities of an office, relieving professional staff of clerical detail; duties include taking calls from the public and from community providers and referring appropriately, covering the TB disease reporting fax when needed, assembling patient charts, mailing Public Health disease notification letters, and maintaining an inventory of office supplies; assists with filing and retention of client records; performs other clerical duties as assigned.
  • As needed, enters verified tuberculosis case reports into California Department of Public Health electronic disease reporting system (CalREDIE); prepares basic reports upon request; monitors regularly for out of State/interjurisdictional TB case transfers and reports information to professional staff in a timely manner.
  • Performs electronic client registration.
  • Maintains TB educational materials, ensuring publications are current and supplies are sufficient to meet daily need; disseminates forms and educational brochures upon request.
  • Complies with current HIPAA Privacy and HIPAA Security Rule requirements when handling patient and employee information; maintains HIPAA compliant work-environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the classification.

This is a hybrid position which requires three days onsite in our San Leandro Office, and two remote days. We are located next to the San Leandro Bart Station.

The HST work hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

The ability to meet the appropriate educational and/or experience requirements for the class for which the incumbent is training prior to promotion.
