GENERAL SUMMARY:Manages Neonatal Program Coordinator (NPC) resources and delegates tasks/responsibilities as appropriate to optimize achievement of NPC team scope and objectives. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork. Provides primary health care and specialized health services to an assigned caseload of neonates and their families according to the Scope of Practice as identified by the National Association of Neonatal Nursing – Division of Advanced Practice Nursing. In addition to diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses, these role plans and implements interventions while evaluating patient responses under the direction and in partnership of the designated collaborating physician or supervising physician, while emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
2. *Assists neonatal care leadership in identifying areas for improvement and establishing goals for neonatal care.
3. *Provides clinical oversight of the NPC team; mentors NPC staff to ensure compliance with procedures and protocols, collaborating with Pediatricians, Obstetricians and Neonatologists as appropriate.
4. Performs chart audits routinely, providing feedback to providers on performance and educates when applicable.
5. *Ensures staff members receive an orientation and ongoing educational development based upon organization and unit requirements and individualized employee needs.
6. *Conducts timely staff performance appraisals ensuring staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies through coaching and individual development in collaboration with the CNO and Medical Director.
7. *Manages NPC resources to meet patient needs and adhere to budget; assists neonatal care leadership in developing an NPC human resource budget adequate to meet NICU care needs based upon strategic priorities and best practices.
8. *Conducts patient (i.e. neonate) assessments including obtaining a relevant health and medical history, performing a physical examination based on age and history. Performs or orders preventive and diagnostic procedures based on the patient’s age and history and identifying health and medical risk factors.
9. *Diagnoses patients by synthesizing and analyzing the collected data; formulating a differential diagnosis based on the history, physical examination and diagnostic test results.
10. *Identifies and implements a patient treatment plan which may include ordering additional diagnostic tests; selecting appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions; developing a patient education plan; and making appropriate treatment referrals.
11. *Implements patient care plans based on scientific principles, theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise; accurately conducts and interprets diagnostic tests; accurately prescribes pharmacologic agents and non-pharmacologic therapies; provides relevant patient education; and makes referrals to other health professionals and community agencies as needed.
12. *Determines the effectiveness of patient treatment plans; documents patient care outcomes; reassesses and modifies treatment plans as necessary to achieve health and medical goals.
13. Participates as a team member in the provision of health and medical care; interacts and collaborates with professional colleagues to provide comprehensive care.
14. *Accurately documents patient findings, treatment plans and evaluations; maintains patient confidentiality per departmental and facility protocols and procedures.
15. *Attends high-risk deliveries including all preterm and multi-gestational pregnancies, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, infants with suspected congenital anomalies or infections and prenatally depressed infants.
16. Attends vaginal or cesarean section deliveries as requested by the obstetrical, neonatal or family physician.
17. *Provides and participates in neonatal resuscitations in labor and delivery, NICU and newborn nursery.
18. *Performs procedures for neonates including intubation, lumbar puncture, percutaneous central catheter placement, umbilical vessel catheterization, emergency thoracentesis insertion, emergency paracentesis, peripheral arterial puncture, peripheral radial artery insertion and suprapubic bladder aspiration.
19. Writes daily progress notes and notes/documents significant changes in patient condition.
20. *Orders medications, fluids and nutrition, collaborating with the on-call neonatologist as appropriate.
21. Applies knowledge of age specific and developmental needs related to plan of care, intervention, and patient response to care.
22. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
23. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
24. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Maintains clinical competency as required for position including but not limited to current federal, Nebraska DEA number, and annual skill competency verification.
2. Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations related to nursing and medical services within practice area.
3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act required. Master of Science degree in Nursing with focus in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner preferred. Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska required. Certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner by examination through the National Certification Corporation required. Minimum of five (5) years neonatal clinical experience as a nurse or NPC required.
Integrated practice agreement with the Medical Director for Neonatal Services as required by Nebraska State law required and must be arranged prior to employment. Completion of Bryan credentialing and re-credentialing process required for continued employment.
OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
Neonatal Resuscitation Programs (NRP) required.
Certification with the U. S. Drug Enforcement Administration for prescriptive authority required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
