Position Title:
Full-Time High School Teacher: Physical Education & Health / Work-Based Learning

Department: Aspen School District

Reports to: Aspen High School Principal

Classification: ESP or Certified Full-time Exempt/Salary

Contract Period: 9 Month (185 days with some variance depending on the year)

Compensation: Salary Range per Certified Salary Schedule

Position Summary:
This teaching position at Aspen High School is a hybrid of health and physical education and work-based learning.

  • Health/Physical Education: Plan and implement a comprehensive curriculum that meets or exceeds state and national standards to motivate each student to cultivate good decision-making around emotional and social well-being, positive communication, healthy eating, physical fitness, tobacco and drug abuse prevention, human sexuality, and violence prevention. This educator works to discover and develop talents of students in physical achievement; to guide students to understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to learning and performing physical activities; and to guide students, within their distinctive abilities, to demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
  • Work-Based Learning: The WBL Coordinator will oversee the WBL Program that is designed to give students authentic work experiences on the job, outside of the classroom in fields of their interests. The purpose of this program is to connect academic learning with work experience, to provide a testing ground for career interests, to give students high school credit for their work experiences and the opportunity to be responsible for their schedule, and to earn some income.


Requirements:

  • Current Colorado Teaching License with an endorsement in Health and Physical Education or the ability to obtain this license within the first 3 months of employment;

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Physical Education / Health Teacher
    • Based upon the Colorado Health and Physical Education Standards plan, evaluate, and revise curricula from freshman year to advanced levels of instruction including International Baccalaureate;
    • Demonstrate willingness and ability to implement in-depth curriculum for physical and personal well-being, social and emotional wellness, and prevention and risk management, including mental health skills to recognize and manage emotions; human sexuality; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention; violence prevention and safety in home, school, community, and personal relationships;
    • Possess ability and comfort with teaching a variety of classes in Health and Physical Education, including, but not limited to: First Aid, CPR, Lifeguard Training, Traditional PE Activities, Non-Traditional Activities, Weight Training and Swimming;
    • Identify pupil needs and collaborate with other professional staff members to help pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems;
    • Work with the district health/wellness committee to establish strategies addressing priority student health-enhancing and health-risk behaviors;
    • Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement;
    • Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils;
    • Organize and collaborate with the local community health organizations, helping students to identify community resources for the purpose of maintaining health-enhancing lifelong physical activity;
  • Work-Based Learning Teacher
    • Site visits to current and potential employers
    • Holding students accountable for paperwork, attendance, and performance on the job
    • Community outreach to foster relationships with employers to create internships and jobs.
    • Running the Community Partner board that gathers twice a year
    • Collaboration with the CTE department to ensure students are building upon their academic programming at AHS with intentional WBL.
  • General Teaching Responsibilities
    • Establish a respectful environment of a diverse population of students, developing a classroom environment in which each student has the opportunity to think independently and express original ideas;
    • Facilitate learning for all students using a variety of instructional methods, integrating and utilizing technology, to provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, encourage exploration of ideas, and develop leadership qualities;
    • Take responsibility for student academic growth using a variety of strategies to inform instructional decisions;
    • Reflect on teaching practices, analyzing student learning, development, and growth and apply what is learned to improve instruction;
    • Possess the ability to communicate and interact effectively and productively, both verbally and in writing, with all staff;
    • Demonstrate enthusiasm for collaboration, using multi-tiered system of supports, with a team of administrators, teachers, and support staff;
    • Demonstrate ability to work with cross-departmental and or grade level teams to develop goals for improving student achievement;
    • Demonstrate teacher leadership, advocating for students and exhibiting high ethical standards;

  • Continue work on creative problem solving and its application in the class as students make and test theories and skills and make connections among ideas, strategies, and solutions
  • Communicate with all stakeholders (student, parents, administration, teachers, staff, counselors, community members) on multi-tiered systems of supports, goals, and progress
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and required course descriptions and outlines;
  • Set up and maintain classrooms and storage areas, including equipment and weight room;
  • Manage oneself (is organized, prepared, and punctual; manages resources; meets deadlines follows through on commitments; demonstrates appropriate physical appearance relative to job and environmental expectations) in a manner that enhances the image of public education;
  • Act consistently in ways that directly support the missions of Aspen High School and the Aspen School District
  • Display a willingness to learn new information
  • Use clear verbal and written communication and strong listening skills
  • Develop and maintain rapport and effective relationships with adolescents and adults contacted in carrying out duties and responsibilities by using courtesy, diplomacy, collaboration, cooperation, support, and professional conduct
  • Contribute actively to the goals and success of all teams and team members through collaboration, cooperation, and flexibility (give and take) in team discussions, activities, and decision making
  • Maintain high ethical standards, legal responsibility, and confidentiality
  • Abide by Aspen School District policies and procedures

Working Environment:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, sitting standing walking, significant dexterity for demonstration of movement while participating in games and sports, and repetitive motion with computer use. The job is performed in a generally clean and comfortable environment.
