JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Formulations Engineer will be responsible for developing new formulations, operating compounding equipment, conducting testing, analysis, and providing accurate and concise reports in support of product development. The candidate will develop and implement new compounds from conceptualization to production.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities

•Operate equipment and perform standardized testing in the plastic laboratories under the direction of the Manager, Formulations.

•Interpret and implement regulatory standards and methodologies.

•Calibrate and perform preventative maintenance on equipment in the laboratories at the Cofer Technology Center.

•Provide assistance to compounding and extrusion operations.

•Evaluate raw materials, raw material suppliers, and compounds for cost reduction and quality improvements.

•Provide technical assistance for process selection, equipment specifications and start-up of compounding additions.

•Develop and update SOP’s for the Formulations Area.

•Independently prioritize and complete assigned projects while adhering to deadlines given by the Manager, Formulations.

•Provide input for specifications on compounds and raw materials.

•Keep abreast of new technology in compounding and extrusion fields as well as industry requirements making sure it is incorporated where feasible.

•Document and communicate test results within multiple tiers of the corporate infrastructure in an ISO 9001 environment.

•Generate and compound formulations on compounding equipment such as twin screws, kneaders, internal mixers, high intensity mixers, single screw extruders, roll mills, and plaque presses.

•Characterize polymers and formulations using equipment such as DSC, TGA, FTIR, Rheometers, and related equipment.

•Oversee extrusion startup and process improvements on the prototyping wire line. Occasional travel to manufacturing facilities to oversee compounding operations as well as compound extrusion is required.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
• Ten years of experience in compound development preferred.
• Experience with low smoke halogen free technologies, silane and moisture curable polyolefins, high temperature XLPO, automotive wire and cable, silicone elastomers, and transit cable a plus.
• Experience with UL, CSA, and other relevant listing agencies a plus.
• Experience with analytical equipment such as DSC, TGA, and FTIR is preferred.
• Experience with twin screws, kneaders, batch mixers, roll mills, and extrusion preferred.
• Experience scaling compounds from lab scale to production scale.
• Must have strong leadership skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, time management skills, and interpersonal skills.
• Must be a strong team player with a firm personal commitment toward the business.
• Must have excellent computer skills including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Physical effort is occasionally required. Must be able to lift up to 45 lbs.
• Infrequent travel is required.
