FORMULATION CHEMIST (HYBRID)

SUMMARY

The Formulation Chemist assists the Senior Research and Development Chemist Supervisor in conducting chemical and physical laboratory tests of automotive chemicals, compounds, lubricants, analyzing test data and documenting results. The associate in this position will also assist with cost optimization of formulas, quality assurance, label approval, and technical customer questions.

Ideal candidate is located in the Council Bluffs, IA area. Will operate on a hybrid schedule.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the job.

  • Develop and manage the internal product quality control system.
  • Develop and modify formulations for automotive, industrial, and commercial lubricants as well as windshield wash and RV antifreeze.
  • Analyze and interpret test data of in-process and finished products to determine chemical content and other characteristics. Compile and analyze test information to determine operating efficiency of process or equipment and to diagnose malfunctions. Prepare technical reports for use by operations and management.
  • Review testing and quality records and procedures. Recommend measures to improve testing procedures and use of equipment. Establish or adjust work procedures to meet testing schedules.
  • Design, review, revise, and document standard operating procedures for test equipment and lab practices and complete training for associates.
  • Affect improvement of test methods for ICP and EDXRF spectrometers including by guiding lab personnel in improvement processes and practices and travelling to other laboratories.
  • Identify and contribute to continuous improvement efforts to reduce costs or increase productivity without reducing effectiveness.
  • Determine and implement corrections to non-conforming product.
  • Compile metrics related to fluid quality, monitor trends, and recommend and implement corrective actions.
  • Interpret the performance and quality of product; use a variety of lab equipment, including complex lab testing and statistical process control programs for lab equipment.
  • Monitor calibration of quality instruments, companywide.
  • Plan sequence of testing and calibration procedures for instruments and equipment. Oversee the calibration of test instruments according to specifications.
  • Administer quality instrument system including data integrity audits, companywide.
  • Administer quality management software user accounts and structure.
  • Assist maintaining lab equipment at high quality level and calibration, including lab equipment repair.
  • Analyze and interpret test data and prepare technical reports for use by production and management personnel. Adjust formulas and processes based on test results.
  • Maintain product test specifications in the laboratory quality control system.
  • Answer technical questions related to formulations for internal and external customers, taking into account confidential information of the company, customers, and suppliers.
  • Review product labels to verify accuracy of technical and performance claims.
  • Maintain an open and candid working relationship with immediate supervisor/manager in discussing matters of importance.
  • Prepare chemical solutions for use in processing materials and direct testing procedures.
  • Maintain lab supplies by verifying inventory and places orders when needed.
  • Test and analyze products, in-process, finished and sample.
  • Formulate hand blends and obtain materials needed to make them.
  • Effectively report test data and results.
  • Maintain manual and computer records associated with testing, samples, and blends.
  • Generate a variety of documentation including certificates of analysis.
  • Lead intra-laboratory round robin testing, including routine testing programs and third party lab testing; affect changes to practices and procedures.
  • Prepare samples for shipment.
  • Properly dispose of samples and supplies.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and regularly clean work area, machines, and equipment.
  • Adhere to established company values, practices, policies and procedures at all times. Follow and support compliance with all applicable safety rules, laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Demonstrate regular and punctual attendance at the assigned work location. Travel required on a periodic basis.

Minimum Experience, Education, and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science or technical field or at least 1-3 related experience is required.
