FORENSIC DRUG ANALYST
The Lorain County Crime/Drug Lab has an immediate opening for a Full Time Forensic Drug Analyst.
Position Overview:
Under direction, performs forensic, chemical and/or biological sample analysis utilizing varying lab equipment such as gas chromatography mass spectrometry, immunoassay, etc. Adheres to the policies and procedures of the county and laboratory to include documentation of evidence sampling/handling utilizing chain-of custody. Demonstrates professional integrity. Attends hearings as requested to testify to laboratory findings. Demonstrates competency in performing dilutions and extractions.
The qualified applicant will be responsible for performing chemical analysis in the drug identification section of the laboratory. Casework experience of at least one year in the analysis of controlled substances and/or body fluids using GC/MS is preferred. This individual must have a general knowledge of proper laboratory instrumentation and procedures, quality assurance and laboratory safety; ability to write clear concise reports and thorough understanding of proper documentation; ability to verbally communicate scientific concepts; ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.
Qualifications: must possess at time of application: Bachelor’s Degree in forensic or clinical laboratory science, chemistry, biology, or a closely related discipline with a minimum of two (2) years of experience performing testing/analysis of samples in a laboratory setting. Certifications as required by Crime Lab Director.
Equipment Operated: Computer, Copy Machine, Fax Machine, Microsoft Office Suite, Shimadzu GC/MS and associated software, Indiko Plus Immunoassay Analyzer and associated software, Invize Software, OCSS portal, and varying laboratory equipment for measurement, experience working with a LIMS (Lab Information Management System) is a bonus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and analyze drug samples on GC/MS;
- Evidence integrity;
- Write laboratory reports.
Competencies:
- Extremely organized and punctual in working with legal samples;
- Ability to stand for long periods of time for sample preparation;
- Familiarity with GC/MS principles/troubleshooting/theory;
- Troubleshooting lab equipment and problem solving;
- Evidence metrology, understanding hypermetric distribution statistics in order to analyze large sample populations;
- Excellent note taking, organization of files and scheduling tasks;
- Must follow the Code of Professional Responsibility of the Practicing Forensic Scientist (ethics, unbiased opinions, continuing education);
- Must possess knowledge of rules of evidence, evidence handling, expert witness testimony, quality control and quality assurance;
- Familiarity with chain of custody sheets and accuracy filling them out;
- Ability to organize and file paperwork for each case at intake, while analyzing, and after releasing;
- Ability to communicate and work well with people from a variety of backgrounds such as law enforcement, attorneys, felons, juvenile offenders, etc.;
- Communicate daily with law enforcement officers and courts about status of cases, results, theory, etc.;
- Meet with law enforcement officers to receive and release drug and urine/blood evidence;
- Ability to write lab reports with accuracy and honesty, distribute certified copies to law enforcement agencies and courts;
- Ability to explain lab report results to a jury; public speaking and court testimony experience is a bonus;
- Spanish speaking is a bonus, but not required.
Additional duties may include covering different sections of the lab as needed.
