FIREFIGHTER / EMT - TRAINEE
Position Type: Full-time; Non-exempt
Purpose: The purpose of this recruiting event is to establish a pool of qualified candidates from which current and future vacancies are filled.
Starting Salary (Full-time): $40,720 - $42,781 depending on certifications
Work Schedule: Twenty-four (24) hour shifts rotate every third day.

Applicants must be available to participate in the Basic Firefighter Qualifying Exam and physical agility exam scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2023. ________________________________________________________________________________________________About This Opportunity: Performs protective service work responding to fires and emergency medical service calls, performing fire suppression, emergency medical response and related duties, maintaining station and equipment, participating in continuing training, and related work as apparent or assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Performs general firefighting, emergency medical and vehicle rescue activities.
- Attends training classes for technical rescue operations.
- Attends in-service training classes.
- Performs equipment, hydrant and fire house testing and maintenance.
- Performs various public services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression. Some knowledge of emergency techniques and procedures.
- Some knowledge of basic life support principles and techniques.
- Some knowledge of hazardous materials and accident extrication principles and techniques.
- General knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City of Maryville.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles, machines, or equipment and the ability to use measuring devices.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to prepare and analyze written or computer data. ยง
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, volunteers, and the general public.
- Ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression.
Physical Requirements:
- Regular exertion of up to 25 lbs. of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force, and occasional exertion of over 100 lbs. of force.
- Repetitive standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, climbing or balancing, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting, and reaching.
- Requires ability to taste, smell and use of hands to handle or feel.
- Close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision.
- Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
- Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Exposure to humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, vibration, blood borne pathogens, and the risk of electrical shock.
- Wear specialized personal protective equipment including a self -contained breathing apparatus.
- Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Physical endurance and agility.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements:
- Must obtain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification within 18 months of hire.
- Must obtain Firefighter I certification within eighteen months of hire.
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of Tennessee.
- Minimum age is 18 years.
