THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael Fire Department is seeking a full-time Fire Mechanic. This position repairs and maintains fire apparatus at a high standard of function and operational reliability.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned.

  • Maintains and repairs gas and diesel-powered fire apparatus.
  • Maintains and repairs utility cars and trucks.
  • Diagnoses valves, hydraulic cylinders and swivels.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Diagnoses and repairs differentials, air and hydraulic brakes, hydraulic systems, clutch systems; and related components.
  • Diagnoses and repairs steering, electrical and radio systems.
  • Inspects fire apparatus to meet acceptable state requirements.
  • Tests and repairs a variety of non-vehicular equipment including hoses, nozzles, generators, pumps, electrical cords and headsets.
  • Repairs, maintains and upgrades SCBAs and maintains records.
  • Fabricates parts and apparatus for special use.
  • Responds to emergency calls, third alarms or when needed during off duty hours.
  • Purchases fluids, parts, and stock items.
  • Coordinates vehicle and equipment schedules for maintenance.
  • Makes road calls both while on and off duty in response to vehicle and equipment problems.
  • Maintains vehicle and equipment and maintenance repair records.
  • Able to work well independently and with other maintenance/mechanic staff as needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • California vehicle laws and codes.
  • Fire equipment & apparatus operations and repair.
  • Record keeping.
  • Fire department regulations, policies, procedures, and operations.
  • Hydraulics, pump aerial ladders, and snorkels.
  • Personal computers and related software.
ABILITY TO:
  • Use hand, bench and machine tools and equipment.
  • Design and fabricate equipment parts.
  • Work from broken parts, blueprints, and sketches in preparing or making new pieces of apparatus.
  • Make cost estimates.
  • Maintain records and write reports.
  • Operate all fire apparatus.
  • Provide own tools.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledges, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:

  • High School diploma.
  • Commercial Class B with tank endorsement or greater.
  • Current and continual Fire Mechanic 2 or EVT Fire Apparatus Technician 2 or greater.
  • Five (5) years journey level experience in heavy diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Smog, brake, and lamp certification from the State of California is preferred.

The City of San Rafael offers an attractive compensation and benefits program. The salary range for this position is $8,061 - $9,798 per month, DOQ/DOE and a competitive benefits program including:

  • Retirement: The City is a part of the Marin County Employee Retirement Association (MCERA) plan, which offers reciprocity between agencies in CalPERS (this is part of the 37 Act County System):
    • Classic Employees (Tier 2 – hired on or after 7/1/2011) - 3% @ at 55 formula, average of three years of compensation.
    • PEPRA employees – (hired after 1/1/13 or with 6-month break in service) are eligible for a 2.7% at 57 formula, average of three highest years of compensation.
  • Health Insurance: Full flex cafeteria plan which can be applied to a health plan or converted to cash (Employee Only - $778.29; Employee+1 - $1,257.08 Employee+Family - $1,852.08; Waive Coverage $300.00)
  • Life Insurance/Accidental Death & Dismemberment: $5,000 each
  • Dental Insurance: Fully paid premiums for employee and eligible dependents
