The full-time job duties vary greatly from the quiet times of routine maintenance of firefighting equipment and desk work to the excitement of responding to emergency calls and managing staff. Someone with a passion for providing excellent customer service, to our community, during stressful, emergency situations and has prior firefighter and leadership experience will be a great fit for this role.

A Day in the Life:

  • Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief and Captain, the Lieutenant is responsible for the command of a shift including the apparatus, equipment and personnel involved with combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires and the saving of life and property.
  • Responsible for incident command at an emergency scene and abatement of the emergency, including entering burning buildings with firefighters, unless working under a superior officer.
  • Responsible for correcting hazardous actions of firefighters, enforcement of Standards Operating Procedures (S.O.P.’s) and rules and regulations and the recommendation of further disciplinary action, if warranted, to the Captain and/or Fire Chief.
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance of apparatus and equipment in accordance with standing orders and the timely completion of required fire and medical emergency reports.
  • While subject to the requirements of written orders, regulations, and the verbal directions of a superior, the Lieutenant exercises great independence of judgment and action while in command at fires, rescues, and other emergencies.

  • A competitive salary range per the IAFF Collective Bargaining Agreement, depending on experience, from $64,050 - $79,971, with additional paramedic pay available.

What You Will Need:

  • Associates Degree - in Public Administration or Fire Science preferred but not required.
  • Current Emergency Medical Services licensure of Emergency Medical Technician or greater. Shall obtain Michigan Paramedic license within one year of hire.
  • Certification in Fire Fighter I and II in accordance with the standards established by the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council.
  • Fire Officer I and II obtained within 3 years of date of hire.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience as a full-time firefighter or six (6) years experience as a part-time firefighter.
  • Haz-Mat Awareness.
  • Haz-Mat Operations.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of training per year.
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license.
