Essential Functions
- The Farm Assistant reports to the Coordinator of Animal Health Research for work assignments. This position works closely with other farm employees, faculty, and students, thus excellent interpersonal skills are necessary.
- Will assist in all tasks related to the livestock production.
- Duties include ensuring that all nutritional, house and health care needs of the animals are met and maintained to the highest level, upkeep of research facilities which includes washing and disinfection, and maintaining operational readiness and safety of animal facilities for research.
- Responsible for assisting researchers with animal handling and sampling, providing routine animal care such as vaccination, deworming, and applying animal identification, and providing general construction and maintenance of farm equipment and facilities that support routine care for animals.
- Responsible for general maintenance of the grounds and common areas surrounding animal enclosures. Some travel to other farm units may be required.
- May handle pesticides, herbicides, and hazardous chemicals on a team or alone.

Education and Experience:
Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of relevant experience in farming practices.
Level III : High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 year of relevant experience in farming practices.
Level IV: High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 year of relevant experience in farming practices.
Substitutions for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Certification or Licensure Requirements:
Possession of a valid drivers license
Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of relevant experience in farming practices.
Level III : High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 year of relevant experience in farming practices.
Level IV: High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 year of relevant experience in farming practices.

When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Minimum Skills and Abilities
Must have experience working with and around large animals. Experience in general farm work and farming practices, to include the operation of farm equipment. Must have the ability to lift heavy objects.

Possession of a valid drivers license, ability to obtain a pesticide license may be required in specific positions.

Experience in care and well-being of livestock. Experience in hay management and harvesting.
