The Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI), part of Providence Swedish, is seeking a dynamic, innovative and distinguished physician leader to serve as its Executive Medical Director. This is an exciting opportunity for an established physician executive to execute Swedish Cancer Institute's strategic and operational goals, objectives and standards of clinical performance.
Providence Swedish is renowned for its strong clinical reputation and the reputation of its Clinical Institutes, including the Swedish Cancer Institute. Providence Swedish is an integrated healthcare delivery network inclusive of tertiary/quaternary medical centers, a research institute, community hospitals, a large employed medical group, and an extensive network of ambulatory care services. The system is located in downtown Seattle and the surrounding suburbs and serves Seattle, the Puget Sound and the Pacific Northwest region.
The Executive Medical Director will be responsible for the formulation and articulation of strategies and objectives for organizing and managing Swedish Cancer Services across the Puget Sound. He/she is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with other cancer programs within the Providence system, along with other local and national programs to form a world class cancer care network. The focus of this position will be to ensure the strategic development and efficient operations of cancer services across the system, focusing on quality, patient experience, performance and optimal outcomes. This executive will continue to strengthen Swedish Cancer Services‘ integrated approach to care and will enhance the unified approach to whole patient care. He/she will develop and articulate a physician strategy inclusive of both employed and independent physicians. He/she will be expected to strengthen relationships with clinical staff throughout the organization, leading an engaged multi-disciplinary team that takes pride in its work and reputation, leading to strong clinician and staff engagement throughout the system.
The Executive Medical Director will be an experienced, proven healthcare system leader. He/she will have served in a complex and matrixed environment in a large, integrated healthcare delivery system and will have considerable experience running a highly effective cancer enterprise inclusive of multi-disciplinary specialty care, research, and teaching enterprises. He/she will be a proven change agent who understands systems engineering and the use of data analytics to drive operational, quality, and financial performance. This person will be experienced in leading and implementing innovative quality, safety and performance improvement initiatives to achieve superior clinical quality, efficient operations and favorable financial outcomes with high satisfaction levels for patients and staff. He/she will bring process improvement experience and knowledge of best practices and contemporary standards to the management of the clinical enterprise. Importantly, this person will have demonstrated success in collaborating with physicians, nurses, other clinicians, and administrative executives. Their leadership style will be one that is proactive, results oriented, and shows a history of achieving positive outcomes in complicated, changing and multifaceted environments. This position requires high emotional intelligence to achieve these aims.

The Executive Medical Director will collaborate with various leaders throughout the organization to execute Swedish Cancer Institute's strategic and operational goals, objectives and standards of clinical performance.
Additionally, the Executive Medical Director will be responsible for major roles within the institute concerning strategic planning, recruitment, philanthropic activity, market development and strengthening relationships with both internal and external partners. The Executive Medical Director position is a 1.0 FTE administrative position. (The incumbent will have the option to maintain a .2 FTE clinical practice)
The Executive Medical Director will be responsible for ensuring SCI's strategic plan developed is in concert with the Providence Swedish Administration and reflects the support of the mission, vision, and values, as an organization that places patients and communities first. The Executive Medical Director will work to ensure that all clinical programs under his/her leadership have the highest quality of care, efficient operations, cost-effectiveness, and optimal patient satisfaction and provider engagement. The Executive Medical Director also shares joint accountability with their administrative partner for attainment of financial performance targets.
The Executive Medical Director will ensure that clinical staff are informed regarding relevant strategy, direction, current issues, and management responses to relevant issues. This position will also be responsible for the development of the physician and advanced practice clinicians (APC) recruitment plan. The Executive Medical Director will be responsible for providing annual performance reviews for all the clinicians in their area of oversight in accordance with Providence Swedish policies and procedures.
Reporting Relationships
The Executive Medical Director reports and is accountable to the Chief Medical Officer for the North Division Clinical Institutes for the performance of the Institute/Service Line. This position will meet regularly with the executive leadership team to monitor and review progress. The Medical Directors in the Swedish Cancer Institute report to the Executive Medical Director.
Responsibilities
The successful Executive Medical Director will have the following key responsibilities:
Patient Access
- Develop a culture and environment that engages patients and their families in addressing their respective needs.
- Partner with physician leaders to coordinate physician schedules to optimize access.
- Serve as a strategic partner with Primary Care and Ambulatory Leadership to optimize patient access and referral process for respective institute/service line.
Clinical Quality
- Champion the development of best-in-class clinical quality and outcomes across the care continuum.
- Ensure the alignment and execution of the Providence St. Joseph Health Clinical Program Services Quality and Operating Metrics.
- Serve and represent the Swedish Cancer Institute on the Providence St. Joseph Health Cancer and Digestive Health Institute Leadership Council, and other system level committees.
- Provide leadership among all levels of clinicians and staff to provide a patient and family- centered experience of care.
- Actively champion initiatives and programs to optimize patient-centered design and patient experience in their institute/service line to achieve best-in-class patient experience.
- Orchestrate a coordinated care experience of service excellence across the continuum.
- Provider Engagement Development and Performance
- Provide leadership and oversight to ensure there is clarity to the vision and accountabilities to achieve the goals of the institute and SHS.
- Partner with Providence St. Joseph Health Provider Services division to develop comprehensive provider recruitment plans.
- Act as a servant leader to enhance the engagement and retention of physicians and reduce provider turnover.
- Promptly address provider performance, behavior and impairment issues seeking assistance and guidance from SHS leadership, as appropriate.
- Serve as a professional link between the Medical Staff Governance Structure, other Swedish medical directors, departments, and administration to facilitate communication, and engage in the development of interdisciplinary treatment teams and approaches.
Financial Performance, Resource Allocation and Program Planning
- Partner with Swedish Executive Leadership and administrative partners in the creation of the Institute Strategic Plan in support of the SHS Strategic Plan.
- On an annual basis, update objectives and goals with the accountable leader and administrative partners based on previous year accomplishments and organizational needs and strategies.
- Successfully implement agreed upon program goals and initiatives.
- Continually pursue financial stewardship to optimize the performance of the service line or institute.
- Engage with administrative partners to help shape annual budget planning
Goals and Objectives
This Executive Medical Director is expected to accomplish several key objectives within the first 12 to 18 months. The following goals represent some of the main objectives for this position:
- Demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the mission and values of the Providence Health System and Swedish Health Services, adhering to the mission and values at all times. Establish a style and culture within SCI that promotes high quality, excellent outcomes, customer service, clinician engagement, visibility, transparency, and focus on the patients.
- Establish personal and professional credibility through skillful leadership and delivery. Become a trusted, integral member of the SCI Executive Management Team and Clinical Leadership Team and a resource across the Swedish Health System and Providence. Effectively lead clinical teams throughout the inpatient and ambulatory care networks in SCI.
- Communicate a common vision and direction for SCI within Swedish Health Services that is consistent with system goals and strategic objectives. Communicate strategic objectives, developing and executing programs that operationalize key strategic initiatives.
- Assess the structure of SCI and provide an organization structure with clear accountabilities, efficient reporting relationships, and clear role definition. Transform the delivery of clinical care through an efficient clinical organization structure.
- Redefine the care delivery model to deliver the best care with the lowest possible cost and the most efficiency. Standardize procedures and adopt best practices across the various SCI entities and locations. Establish clinical protocols and standards of care that are consistent across all inpatient and outpatient sites.
- In concert with the health system leadership team, develop a robust world class academic and research presence.
- Work with the operations team to prepare SCI for success under value-based care reimbursement strategies including improving operating efficiency and cost effectiveness, as well as provider and patient experience.
- Create measurable and actionable steps for quality improvement in all publicly reported measures to achieve top quartile performance.
- Ensure strong clinician engagement and retention of clinical talent; foster a culture of trust and partnership with physicians and other caregivers. Engage with physicians and ensure that their practice flow, referral procedures and staffing resources are flexible and efficient to improve their work experience. Create systems for managing provider burnout, improving the culture, and raising clinicians' engagement scores.
- Ensure the optimal utilization of the Epic electronic medical record throughout SCI.
- Form a strong dyad partnership with the SCI Senior Director of operations ensuring a balance of clinical, operating and financial objectives.
- Form a strong relationship with the Providence Cancer Institute leadership. Collaborate in the development and execution of the Providence Cancer strategic plan.
- Develop and implement a highly effective and coordinated clinician recruiting program, anticipating program growth and future needs and ensuring succession and replacement of clinical talent, as needed.
- Serve as a role model, mentor, and advisor to clinical professionals in the organization, particularly the physician leaders. Provide opportunities for team building, mentoring, and growth; institute succession planning, talent management, and development of staff, with emphasis on identifying emerging physician leaders, building core competencies, and nurturing career progression.
- Develop and implement a compelling marketing, communications, and outreach plan for SCI; ensure a powerful reputation for SCI locally, regionally and nationally. Establish a personal reputation for Oncology leadership in the Seattle community and on a national scale.
- Work with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and other philanthropy professionals within Providence Swedish to ensure proactive outreach to interested donors in the Seattle community and beyond. Employ best practices to reach out to philanthropic donors interested in cancer research and care delivery and continue to develop grateful patient solicitations, grants, and other highly effective fundraising techniques.
Ideal Qualifications
Ten or more years of executive leadership experience in a large, complex integrated delivery system (multi-site)
Ideally oversees multiple elements of the organization, including a combination of multiple hospitals, physician groups/networks, health plans, and/or other services across the continuum of care.

External relations experience and Philanthropy

Construction experience (Cancer Center)
Experience in construction as it relates to involvement in design and implementation of a new cancer center a plus.
Significant background in working through local, system, divisional stakeholders to accomplish objectives.
Experience with value-based reimbursement models
Oversees or partners closely with a health plan, accountable care organization and/or clinically integrated network.
Engagement and leadership in public policy/advocacy
Experience in coordinating policy with a faith-based institution is a plus.
Supports the development, spread and sustainability of Health Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity that will help reduce health disparities and increase equitable health access for the communities served
Experience leading in a competitive market.
Experience developing and/or managing partnerships.
Education/Certification
- Medical degree from an institution of high repute and completion of postgraduate medical education in an ACGME–approved residency program with current Board Certification required. Clinical leaders from multiple specialties will be seriously considered.
- Eligible for licensure in Washington State.
- An M.B.A., M.P.H., M.M.M. or other relevant advanced business degree is strongly preferred.
- Academic rank of Professor desirable
Knowledge and Work Experience
- Demonstrated success in leading a high functioning comprehensive cancer program.
- A track record of demonstrated success working collaboratively within a highly matrixed reporting structure supporting a large teaching hospital or complex healthcare system.
- Outstanding academic and clinical reputation from a leading healthcare institution.
- Experience in a clinically advanced, teaching hospital environment with a reputation of excellence in research, education and clinical care.
- An understanding of and exposure to clinical analytics, process improvement and project management methodologies and change management tools and techniques.
- Experience working in partnership with multiple constituents throughout an organization. This includes achieving consensus through presentations, thought leadership, partnership, and relationship building throughout the organization
- A strong working knowledge of procedures, processes and systems that support clinical delivery areas.
- A strong record as a respected clinician.
