Supervisor: Director of Special Services

General Description: Paraeducators perform a variety of duties in the school at the direction of the school principal or Special Services Director. Specific duties may be assigned by the school principal, director, or by individual staff with whom the paraeducator is assigned to work. Duties may be clerical, supervisory, instructional, or assisting identified students with daily hygiene activities, including personal care.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work at the direction of a teacher with individual and/or groups of students to implement effective instructional activities in accordance with each student’s needs.
  • Assist students with disabilities with their daily hygiene, activities, including personal care (toileting, grooming, lifting, feeding) and with catheterization (following appropriate training).
  • Supervise students in the classroom, on the playground, and in the cafeteria.
  • Assist with collection and maintenance of data on student performance; maintain records and produce instructional materials as directed.
  • When assigned bilingual responsibilities, interpret the school curriculum, procedures, and information for students and parents, in their native language.
  • Attend MDT and IEP meetings when required.
  • Handle discipline, restraint, or disciplinary referrals of students who behave contrary to identified school rules or the student’s IEP.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours or 48 semester hours, all at a 100 level or above), or
  • an associate’s (or higher) degree, or
  • successfully pass all six areas of the Parapro Assessment developed by the Educational Testing Service.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Appropriate knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation; proficient in reading and math and able to assist students in these areas.
  • Proficiency in use of computers for word processing, data management, email communication.Demonstrated ability to communicate and work well with students, staff and parents; a helpful, calm, friendly, and polite manner.
  • Clerical and general office ability including filing and record-keeping.
  • Awareness and appreciation of diversity among individual students.
  • Demonstrated ability to make reasoned decisions and set appropriate expectations for individual students.
  • Willingness to participate in activities and responsibilities assigned by classroom teachers, and in meetings or training offered by the district.
  • Appropriate discretion concerning students, staff, and confidential or privileged information.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a regular or special needs classroom, in an office, and/or in a lunchroom or playground requiring neat, clean personal appearance and work apparel appropriate to a school environment.

  • Moves within the school and occasionally between school locations.

  • Uses a computer for multiple functions, and a telephone and/or email to communicate.

  • Bends, twists, and lifts up to 20 pounds when accessing records and office supplies.

  • May be required to lift or support or restrain students.

  • Uses fingers, hands, arms, facial expressions, and vocalization when working with students.

  • Occasionally exposed to high decibel alarm systems during drills or an actual emergency.
