Job Summary/Overview of the PositionThis position requires skilled work in the operation of heavy, complex, mobile equipment for road and drainage, and water and sewer construction and maintenance. Work involves responsibility for safe and efficient operation of the equipment assigned in construction, underground installations, and infrastructure maintenance operations. May be called out in emergencies and scheduled to work nights, weekends and/or holidays. Position is supervised by the Public Works Supervisor and/or Equipment Operator II. Essential Job Functions
Operation of a wide variety of construction and maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, back hoes, loaders, tractors, and street sweeper in a safe and efficient manner.
Operation of other equipment when necessary to complete assignments and/or maintain work schedule.
Operation of construction and maintenance equipment in excavating of roads, drainage structures, ditches, and waterways.
Perform manual work associated with equipment usage as necessary and when required.
Cleans, inspects, and performs minor repair and adjustments to assigned equipment.
Assists all other City departments with projects as needed.
Work safely, diligently and responsibly at completing assigned tasks.
Operate lift equipment for the installation of street banners, and repair of street lights.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Skill in the operation of varied heavy equipment in road work, drainage, streets, and water and sewer construction maintenance.
Working knowledge of the regulations in the operation of equipment and general practices of safety, and care of heavy road construction and related mobile equipment.
Working knowledge of the operation and minor repairs of heavy equipment commonly used in the Public Works department.
Ability to safely operate heavy equipment in all weather conditions and on rough ground. Ability to work below ground level and work on slippery surfaces.
Ability to read blueprints , understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform assigned duties timely and effectively while working carefully and complying with safety rules.
Ability to check work while in progress and upon completion for compliance with overall objectives.
Ability to follow directions and complete assignments accurately and on time.
Ability to interact effectively with co-workers to carry out job requirements.
Ability to project a good public image and maintain effective customer relations.

Physical Requirements
Standing, use of fingers, arms, hands and legs. Good eyesight (correctable) and hearing (correctable) are essential. Climbing, walking, squatting, bending, stooping, balancing, driving of standard vehicle, light lifting and/or carrying (up to 15 lbs) frequent. Pulling, pushing, kneeling, jumping, heavy lifting and/or carrying (45 lbs and over) are occasional. Additional Information
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of equivalent to education and experience described below that provided knowledge, abilities, and skills to perform the essential job functions would be qualifying. High School Diploma or GED equivalency certificate as issued by a State Board of Education. Experience with excavator, backhoe, grader, front end loader, tractor, dump truck, bulldozer, and power tools.
