POSITION TITLE: Equipping & Discipleship Director

GENERAL STATEMENT: The Salvation Army is a branch of the Christian Church, and the ultimate goal of all programs is a spiritual, emotional and physical regeneration of all people.

RELIGIOUS SUMMARY: Although this position does not require or confer ordination, this is a “ministry position.” Only Christians with a demonstrated strong personal faith and agreement with the teaching of Holy Scripture as explained in The Salvation Army “Articles of War” and the “Handbook of Doctrine” will be considered for this position. Maintaining a lifestyle and witness consistent with the above stated documents is required for continued employment.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Equipping & Discipleship Director will champion a culture of discipleship throughout every area of The Salvation Army Kroc Church while helping people know God, grow in community, and make a difference. The Equipping & Discipleship Director will heavily invest in the equipping of leaders, growing and multiplying groups, and providing discipleship training and resources for everyone in their journey of faith.
The Equipping & Discipleship Director is responsible to assist the Corps Officers in the training and equipping of the congregation with the Word of God with a primary emphasis on leading and developing discipling relationships and discipling small groups. The Equipping & Discipleship Director will work to foster growth in spiritual maturity thereby fulfilling the Great Commission by engaging people through discipling relationships, small groups, spiritual gifts discovery training, and service in local mission projects. The Equipping & Discipleship Director will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the way he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field (e.g. theology, biblical studies, business administration, religious studies, human services), or equivalent experience, and 2+ years of related experience on a church staff.
- Ability to effectively understand, reflect, communicate the Christian principles, mission, goals, and strengths of The Salvation Army and The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.
- Possess a deep love for the Lord, a desire to grow in his/her relationship with Christ, and to be held accountable through this process.
- Become a Kroc Church member, attend and support church worship services, programs and activities on a regular basis.
- Ability to relate well and work with anyone regardless of age, social, economic, religious, or cultural background.
- Can work with children, parents, church visitors/attenders/members, volunteers, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling, and education, including but not limited to:
- Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages.
- Sensitivity to children’s individual needs.
- Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.
- Ability to handle security and crisis situations, calmly.
- Ability to communicate clearly with supervisor, co-workers, volunteers, participants, public.
- Ability to strategically assimilate and retain newcomers into the life of the church so that people move from mere attendance to full commitment (mature disciple).
- Ability to thrive, working in a team ministry environment. This person needs to be of strong character and will have the ability to work with and to develop leaders.
- Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem solving.

- Certification by and participation in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program on an annual basis.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s Degree in relevant field (e.g. theology, biblical studies, business administration, religious studies, human services).
- Active uniform wearing Salvationist in good standing.
- Experience with planning, implementing, and leading programs at the Corps and Divisional level.
- Familiarity with traditional Salvation Army programs at the Corps and Divisional level.
- Familiarity with Hawaii and local culture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for life group ministries, including but not limited to the recruitment, training, and encouragement of life group leaders and host homes, growth in the number of life groups, increase in the number of participants, and health of each life group.
- Move the life group ministry from only attracting the already churched to being a significant front door of the church for newcomers.
- The director would recruit and train leaders, promote life groups, and produce sermon-based curriculum.
- Overall leadership and “Producer” of weekend Worship Services, including but not limited to, pre-weekend Worship Service preparations (e.g. close coordination with worship team and Corps Officers in planning of services. Lead pre-service team huddle to pray with and encourage serve team members prior to the start of worship services.
- In conjunction with the Ministry Team, be responsible for the assimilation of newcomers to the congregation, including but not limited to, follow up phone calls, connecting them to a life group or Bible study, and helping them to find a place of service that best utilizes their passions, spiritual gifts, natural abilities, and acquired skills.
- Develop and lead the Life Group leadership team and coaching team to ensure support and training to life group leaders.
- Direct, lead, coordinate, and/or assist in all functions of the Corps vision and worship services.
- Implement Spiritual Gifts training seminars, in collaboration with the Serve Team Coordinator, which will allow people to discover their spiritual gifts and become engaged in the ministries of the church.
- Lead membership and growth track courses to engage new visitors and members in understanding doctrinal and practical ministry in and through The Salvation Army Kroc Church.
- Preach and teach the Word of God in various settings ranging from a small bible study and/or class during the week to a large congregation at weekend services.
- Be aware of, implement and ensure volunteers are trained in Protecting the Mission policies and practices.
- Attend, promote and assist with Divisional and Territorial events as directed.
- Compile all necessary statistics for activities monthly.
- Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
- Perform other assignments/duties as directed.
- In conjunction with other Ministry Team members, create a vital local missions ministry. Launch local mission projects for those in need that invite new people into the life of Kroc Center Hawaii and train the congregation in discipleship.
- Compile all necessary statistics for activities monthly.
- Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
- Perform other assignments/duties as directed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25-50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds; traveling by airplane. This employee may also be required to work weekends and evenings.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS:
Equipment used includes general office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, scanners, printers, fax machines, telephone (office, cell), microphones, audio-visual equipment, 10-key calculator, and automobile.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Most work will be indoors at the Kroc Center. There will also be times where this employee will be outdoors at various programs, events, and outreach projects. Attendance at trainings and conferences, both in Hawaii and on the mainland, may be required. Extensive travel is possible, including air travel, driving long distances, night driving, overnight travel, and extended travel of three days or more.
