Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator
Reports to: Manufacturing Engineering Manager
Humphrey Products, a privately owned, Kalamazoo-based manufacturer of fluid control and custom engineered solutions for markets including: life sciences, analytical instrumentation, material handling, transportation, industrial automation, and alternative energy has an opening for an Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator.
We are looking for a compliance-minded individual who is passionate about environmental, health and safety compliance practices in the workplace. Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in EHS compliance roles within an industrial or manufacturing environment. Primary responsibilities for this individual will include all aspects of documenting, training, record-keeping and auditing the company’s systems as they pertain to its compliance with applicable environmental, health and safety regulations. Candidates should have a strong sense of urgency and at least 5 years of experience in an EHS compliance role in an industrial or manufacturing environment. They should also be lifelong learners as it pertains to the constantly evolving regulations applicable within the scope of this role. Candidates should be comfortable using Microsoft Word, know how to develop policies, procedures and training manuals and be able to create and use spreadsheets to track projects and compliance activities.
General Description of Job: The EHS Coordinator is responsible for the maintenance, enforcement/compliance and improvement of all systems related to the Company’s environmental, health and employee safety systems. The EHS Coordinator will ensure that the company’s waste streams comply with defined regulatory standards. The EHS Coordinator will oversee training activities related to these areas. When required, this individual will also represent the company to appropriate regulatory agencies such as MIOSHA or MDEQ. All of these responsibilities include responsibility for record keeping and reporting associated with regulatory compliance. Should any non-compliances be noted via either internal or external audit activities, the EHS Coordinator is responsible for coordinating mitigation activities within the company.
Responsibilities:
· Oversight of specific internal systems and/or contractors related to the company’s health, safety, and environmental compliance activities, including audit activities as prescribed frequencies.
· Working through the building’s maintenance personnel, overseeing wastewater treatment and discharge in compliance with City and State regulations.
· Work with MIOSHA and DEQ compliance and inspections on regulated waste streams.
· SDS and MSDS documentation, record keeping and “Right to Know” awareness training.
· Overseeing the Company’s Safety Committee along with employee training for EHS policies and procedures. (LOTO, Right to Know, etc.)
· Ensure organizational practices include the proper disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
· Oversee recycling programs for all waste streams where it is appropriate. (Paper, plastic, metal, wood, oil).
· Maintain all records and/or evidence for compliance activities in a form that can easily be produced on demand and/or as mandated by the prescribing organization.
· Conduct, or contract others to conduct all training required to comply with approved and implemented EHS Policies.
· Collaborate with the Operations Leadership in understanding and adhering to safety policies and procedures, safety audits and EHS training.
· Conduct environmental and safety inspections as required.
· Investigate and report incidents.
· Proactively maintain knowledge of current and emerging federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulatory requirements affecting the facility.
· Manage Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) inventory, personal/department locks, and other safety equipment.
· Engage with technicians on the floor to focus on safety and build their personal safety knowledge.
· Support safety improvement efforts with support from the leadership team and CSOs.
· Assist in day-to-day EHS compliance with training, inspections, PPE, and external stakeholders.
Key Measurables:
· Employee Lost Hours due to Injury.
· Number of Noted non-compliances via Safety and Housekeeping Audits and/or external MIOSHA or DEQ Audit performance.
· Percentage of employees with all appropriate training records.
· Number of past due Corrective or Preventative Action Requests in EHS areas.
Education/Certification Requirements:
- 5 or more years of experience with EHS system oversight, auditing, mitigation, and hands-on compliance within a manufacturing facility.
- The ideal candidate will also possess several years of experience in an audit/inspection role within the EHS.
- Experience negotiating, working with, and administering contracts with outside firms.
