Job DescriptionUnder general direction and procedural control of the Director of Environmental Health Code Compliance, the Environmental Health Specialist enforces the Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER) rules, prepares complex technical reports and /or records. The employee has daily contact with the public frequently involving sensitive matters requiring tact and diplomacy. Job Responsibilities
1. Inspects all types of retail food establishments including, but not limited to foster homes, group homes, restaurants, mobile food vendors, temporary food events and special events.
2. Performs inspections and enforcement activities requiring technical expertise within a particular environmental health enforcement program.
3. Performs detailed tasks concerned with rodent, fly, and mosquito control projects.
4. Attends various meetings involving one or more departments or agencies.
5. Enforces all health codes and ordinances pertaining to environmental control, food safety and City codes.
6. Assist in epidemiological investigations with other agencies.
7. Prepares written reports on inspection findings; outlines any violation of regulations, and recommends corrective measures to be taken or possible court action.
8. Assist in plan review of retail food establishments.
9. Investigates food poisoning outbreaks at the direction of supervisory personnel.
10. Inspects swimming pools for operation and maintenance compliance.
11. Works with various testing equipment and devices.
12. Prepares inspection reports on a computer tablet.
13. Operates, maintains and services mosquito and bee control equipment.
14. Assists in vector control and emergency management activities.
15. Assists in conducting rodent control inspections.
16. Investigates public health nuisance complaints related to food service, environmental health and wastewater public nuisance abatement.
17. Position requires driving City units.
18. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Requirements - 1. Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. The job requires a valid Code Enforcement Officer License under the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration (TDLR) and the Non-Commercial Government Pesticides Applicator License. If candidate lacks licenses, the City will allow up to one (1) year after the date of hire to obtain.
3. Job requires one (1) year of environmental health and/or food safety work and regulation experience.
4. Job requires passing the Food Drug Administration Office of Regulatory Affairs University (O.R.A.U) courses within first year of employment.
5. Registered Professional Sanitarian License Preferred.
6. Job requires a valid Texas Class "C" Driver"s License.
7. Must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual preferred.
8. Must have knowledge of job related equipment, operation and maintenance.
9. Must be customer-service oriented, have a customer friendly attitude and professional appearance at all times.
10. Must be able to work effectively under pressure and respond professionally to public complaints and difficult situations. Physical Requirements
1. Works outdoors on frequent basis, carries and lifts up to 60-80 lbs. on an occasional basis and 30 lbs. on a frequent basis.

1. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
2. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
3. Work schedule includes some unusual working hours, irregular hours or shifts, as evenings, weekends, holidays, and during hurricane or other emergency response situations, and may involve occasional travel. Disclaimer
