The Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House & Insect World is looking for students or recent graduates studying entomology, zoology, or with a degree in a related field. This is a paid position. The position is open May through the student’s return to school date, or through the end of the season which is October. This position will provide professional and intellectual development through a multi-disciplinary educational approach and hands-on work experience. Each employee is required to work in their specialized area(s)an average of 5 - 5 and ½ days each week, including weekends and evening hours. All employees are required to complete various components of the job through the guidance of their supervisor. There are no motorized vehicles on the island and it is the responsibility of the employee to bring a bicycle to the island for transportation if desired.

Housing is provided by the employer for a weekly fee of $100. The apartments are fully furnished.

Base pay starts at $15/hour

1) Educating the public: Our mission is to provide a family friendly, fun and educational experience that will last a lifetime while instilling an appreciation for nature and it’s preservation.

a. The employee will work a specific number of hours in the butterfly, and insect exhibit areas. The purpose of this time is to educate the public by giving tours, working with, and answering questions asked by our customers.

b. Interacting with guests, taking out display animals and providing hands on opportunities is roughly 90% of the position.

2) The employee will work part-time in a USDA regulated lab and must be comfortable working with live insects. He/she will be in charge of all handling, caring for, and maintenance of insects, dead and alive.

3) The employee will be in charge of food sources for all insects. This will require a structured feeding schedule that is strictly followed. An artificial food source is required to supplement the butterflies’ source of nectar in the garden, and the care and maintenance of the feeder insects for the other larger, live exhibited insects will be necessary.

4) Employee will assist with the observation of honeybee behaviors, potential disease, infestation and hive maintenance.

5) All USDA record keeping will be done by the employee on a daily basis. Knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint is required.

6) Good organizational skills and completion of work in a timely manner is a must, as the handling of pupae is time sensitive.

7) Must be able to lift up to 50lbs

8) Research opportunities are available, employees are free to conduct independent research (butterfly/insect behaviors, emergence rates, temperature controls etc.)Interested applicants should send the following information:
