The Engineered Systems Technician will support the building, maintenance and fielding of laser and optical diagnostic systems to measure data from explosive experiments. The position may also support electrical diagnostics. This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Technician 3 or Engineered Systems Technician 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineered Systems Technician 3 ($56,300 - $87,200)
The successful candidate will:
- Apply technical knowledge to tasks assigned by the Diagnostician / Team Leader.
- Under the direction of the Diagnostician, maintain laser and optical diagnostic equipment and work spaces, e.g., orderliness, cleanliness, inventory, supply procurement, shot clean-up, and waste management.
- Under the direction of the Diagnostician, deploy equipment to and perform setup at firing sites
- Assist the Diagnostician in executing diagnostic work safely and securely.
- Participate in preparation of hazard analyses, safety documents and work procedures.
- Work with/around explosives, class 4 lasers, cryogens, chemicals, pressurized systems, energized electrical equipment, pulsed-power systems, hand operated power tools and radioactive materials.
Engineered Systems Technician 4 ($67,800 - $107,700)
In addition to the duties outlined above, an Engineered Systems Technician 4 will be required to:
- Take leadership in deploying equipment to, operating equipment at, and deployment from the firing sites.
- Take leadership in maintenance of the group's laser and optical instrumentation in proper working order and maintenance of equipment and consumables inventory.
- Coordinate with diagnosticians in M-3 to schedule diagnostic measurements and deployment of laser/optical diagnostics.
- Provide electronic and optical support for the deployment and operation of test diagnostics.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Intermediate computer skills with common applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel.
- Experience with working to a set of defined requirements and regulations (e.g., high explosives safety, radiation safety), and working safely and securely in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and/or electronics.
- Experience with equipment repair and equipment assembly/disassembly.
- Experience with working from engineering drawings or electrical diagrams.
- Experience in the common mechanical, electronic and/or optical techniques used in explosive testing is required.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers; strong teaming skills.
Additional Minimum Requirements for the Higher Level (Engineered Systems Tec 4):
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with laser or optical systems in a safe manner.
- Demonstrated experience with electrical circuit/optical system testing and troubleshooting using electronic testing and measurement instruments (e.g. oscilloscopes/digitizers and meters).
- Demonstrated ability to read and follow written and verbal technical instruction, drawings, circuit diagrams, and technical specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to organize equipment and tasks; good time management skills.
Education and Experience:
Applying as Engineered Systems Tec 3
Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Applying as Engineered Systems Tec 4
Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience building or using optical and laser-based diagnostic systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of AC and DC electrical circuits including knowledge of basic electrical network behavior, electronic signal characteristics, levels, noise immunity, transmission limitations, and ground loops.
- Demonstrated knowledge of fiber optic telecommunications technology to include lasers, couplers, fiber connectors, optical circulators, detectors, optical switches, and laser amplifiers.
- Experience with assembling and fielding diagnostics for explosives testing.
- Experience with design software / 3D printing technology.
- Demonstrated experience working in moderate to high hazard environments with a high level of operational formality.
- Active DOE Q Clearance or equivalent.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
