Position Summary:
The Nurse Educator, as part of the nursing leadership team, provides leadership that reflects the vision, mission, and philosophy of the Nursing Department and PNHS. The Nurse Educator facilitates best nursing practice and enhances safe, quality patient care by:

  • Planning, developing, and conducting professional educational opportunities for employees of PNHS in a quality conscious and cost-effective manner.
  • Establishing a work environment that promotes learning by individual growth/development, professional practice, and a collaborative team approach to assure excellence in delivery of quality, age-specific care and high level of staff satisfaction.
  • Conducting unit-based consultation for clinical quality excellence.




Education/Experience:

  • Academic preparation includes a Bachelor in Nursing; Master’s preferred.
  • If Master’s degree not completed upon hire, required within 3 years of employment.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in area of specialty required.
  • Experience in leadership roles, research utilization, staff development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience in teaching preferred.
  • Membership in specialty professional organization preferred.




Special Knowledge/Skills/Certification/Licenses:

1. Valid Minnesota Nursing License.
2. BLS provider status in accordance with American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines.
3. Certification in area of Nursing Specialty (or pursuit within two years) preferred.
4. Evidence of skills in written/verbal communications, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, and leadership.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of cultural diversity and age related growth and development principles necessary to provide appropriate service and assure safety of patients.
6. Demonstrates familiarity and compliance with matters of law, regulations, and internal policies affecting the employment relationship, (including but not limited to FMLA, ADA, discrimination and harassment laws).

Additional Information:

This position supports the oncology education needs across the organization with a majority of time spent at both Frauenshuh Cancer Center at Methodist Hospital and Regions Hospital. Occasional travel to the following oncology locations will be required, Hutchinson, Olivia, Burnsville, Maple Grove, Coon Rapids, Stillwater, Hudson, New Richmond and Amery.


This position requires competency in the following tasks or skills, in addition to the responsibilities stated in the 2OM job description. Including onsite support for multiple locations across the Park Nicollet/HealthPartners organization. This position will be required to have a Minnesota and Wisconsin Nursing License.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Essential Tasks:


1. Supports orientation of new employees across all oncology disciplines.

  • Collaborates with Administrative and Nursing Leaders, Ambulatory and Inpatient Educators, and Preceptors/Clinical Resource Mentors (CRM) to ensure an individualized learning plan is developed for each nursing orientee.
  • Ensures a competency-based orientation is completed for newly hired or transitioning personnel in collaboration with administrative and nursing leadership.
  • Uses performance development resources to assist in development of individualized competency plans.


2. Is available for clinic-based consulting for clinical quality excellence.

a. Regularly monitors patient population-related quality metrics

b. Promotes quality of care and safe patient care through

consulting with clinical staff

c.Raises staff awareness utilizing at-the-elbow educational opportunities.

d. Assists with and aids in support of quality programs including Commission on Cancer and QOPI

e. Partners to ensure hospital based sites are following JCAHO standards


3. Facilitates on-going staff development.

  • Develops and conducts a periodic needs assessment to determine educational/competency needs of nursing team staff.
  • Develops and ensures implementation of in-services/training in response to needs identified by leadership.
  • Participates in the Ambulatory Nursing Education Committee and Inpatient Practice and Education Committee to assess and develop ongoing nursing educational opportunities in collaboration with the Nursing Practice Director
  • Identifies educational needs across a continuum of patient care and ensures implementation of programs and materials using evidence-based practice to ensure staff maintains a high level of clinical expertise.
  • Provides mentoring and development opportunities for Preceptors and other interested staff.
  • Works collaboratively with practice leadership to maintain and update educational and competency materials to reflect current practices.
  • Participates in shared governance model, department specific educational groups, and regulatory readiness efforts.
  • Leads/responsible for annual Oncology Nursing Education symposium


4. Promotes awareness of external opportunities for learning and networking.

  • Consults and collaborates with individuals/community agencies in providing effective continuing education opportunities for the nursing team and provides leadership by actively participating in these programs.
  • Evaluates educational program viability and makes recommendations as to the value of continuing, changing, or discontinuing on-going programs.
  • Actively promotes staff development by providing a schedule and information for local/national educational opportunities, OCN certification, etc.


  • Assists in the establishment of standards or criteria based on the mission, values, and philosophy of HealthPartners. Participates in policy and procedure development, implementation, and interpretation for members of the healthcare team across Oncology sites/employers *Utilizes the concepts and tools of continuous improvement to ensure excellence in patient care endeavors. Works collaboratively and in partnership with the Specialty Services Quality Improvement Team


  • Participates in the placement and experience for all Nursing Students in the Ambulatory Care Environment
    • Mentors nursing leaders in selection of students and development of student experiences
    • Relationship development and maintenance with nursing and technical programs that place students in our clinic environments
    • Oversight of placement and review process for students


  • Coordinates/Participates in the evaluation of new products or equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Scope of Responsibility:

Provides quality and timely information to the Director of Nursing and Patient Care, Oncology Operational Directors, and to Clinical Nursing Leaders regarding the educational needs of staff related to the specific patient populations of the oncology Departments at HealthPartners Medical Group and Park Nicollet including collaboration with Cancer Centers of Western Wisconsin locations. Works with a wide variety of people at all levels within and on behalf of the organization. Maintains a current working knowledge of the philosophies, policies, standards, procedures, and health and safety programs for HealthPartners. Serves as a role model for effective interpersonal, interdisciplinary, and interdepartmental relationships. Participates in educational activities that further his/her professional growth and development. Assists with quality programs to ensure compliance.

Supervision/Work Direction:

Collaborates with patient care unit leadership and practice specialists (e.g. Administrative Directors, Managers, Clinicians, Supervisors, Educators etc.) to provide competency based orientation and ongoing staff development.
