The Mercatus Center at George Mason University seeks a full-time Editor for its publications team. The Editor will be responsible for copyediting and proofreading academic research papers, policy briefs and research summaries (concise versions of applied research), congressional testimony, and other publications as needed for clarity, correctness, style, and consistency, working with scholars and staff to ensure editorial quality and excellence. The Editor’s role is an essential part of the publication process in support of the Center’s mission—to bridge the gap between the academy and policymakers.
The Editor will work from the Mercatus Center’s Arlington, Virginia, office. Mercatus is also open to an editor who works virtually from elsewhere and visits the office monthly to start and quarterly thereafter.

Responsibilities
The Editor ensures that all published Mercatus research is edited, formatted, and distributed in a timely and efficient manner while meeting a high standard of quality. Using Word and InDesign as primary tools, the Editor copyedits and formats manuscripts, shepherds edited manuscripts through a review process, and finalizes text quickly and efficiently. The person in this role also helps to maintain and develop house style and procedures, works alongside six other publishing professionals, and reports to the senior director of publications.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate fluency with the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, and proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite applications, primarily Word, Acrobat (for annotating and editing PDFs), and InDesign (for layout of some products). A familiarity with economics, classical liberal ideas, or both is an added plus.

Qualifications
Successful applicants will possess the following:
  • 3 or more years of copyediting and proofreading experience
  • Philosophical alignment with and passion for Mercatus Center’s mission
  • Professional demeanor paired with strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Thorough understanding of English grammar
  • Basic understanding of publication layout and design (print and digital)
  • Working knowledge of editing and template features of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Superb attention to detail
  • Above-average capacity for organization, time management, and multitasking, along with the ability to balance multiple simultaneous priorities
  • Willingness and ability to learn and use additional software programs, including EndNote, SharePoint, LaTeX, Microsoft Excel, and InDesign/InCopy
  • Familiarity with economics, law, or public policy is plus but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree
