You’d be a member of the multidisciplinary team who, under the direction of a licensed psychologist, provides evidence-based skills coaching, behavioral modification, and direct observation of patients ages 5 to 17 years old in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
Evening and Night shifts include a shift differential in addition to the standard compensation rate. Free ORCA cards are available for Pierce County employees.
Some of what you will do:
- Provide situational counseling, mentorship, and guidance by implementing and reinforcing strategies per the individual treatment plan prepared by the clinical treatment team.
- Provide a collaborative and reflective stance with patients, utilizing de-escalation as a means for maintaining a calm and safe milieu.
- Utilize safe, appropriate behavior management strategies when interacting with patients, some of whom may engage in physically challenging behaviors.
- Facilitate the development of social skills, problem-solving, and decision-making skills while modeling appropriate behavior and responses for patients to follow.
- Transport and accompany patients to appointments or other activities in the community.
- Assist patients in managing their room and activities of daily living; administer therapeutic and recreational groups and activities.
- Implement restraint application or seclusion placement when deemed necessary and ordered by a treating physician, emphasizing the utilization of less restrictive interventions.
Who should apply:
Professionals with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Recreation, Education, or other related Social Sciences fields.
OR
Professionals with 2 years of college education with an emphasis on Social Sciences, Education, Recreation, Psychology, or related fields and at least 2 years of social service experience.
(Social service-related experience may be substituted, year for year, for college education.)
The successful new employee will obtain:
- An Agency Affiliated Counselor license from the Washington State Department of Health within 60 days of employment, as a condition of employment. More information can be found here.
- Crisis Prevention Institute, Basic Life Support, and Basic First Aid certifications.
Desired:
- Working knowledge and experience in intervening and de-escalating in crisis or potentially dangerous situations, with the ability to safety physically intervene to protect patients from harming self or others.
- Knowledge and skills in normal and abnormal growth and development, dynamics of interpersonal relationships, mental health concepts, and community resources.
- Working knowledge and application of behavioral approaches such as Positive Behavioral Support, DBT, and other therapeutic skills.
