TITLE: Safe Harbor Peer Recovery Support / Driver
POSITION SUMMARY:
Peer recovery support is the process of giving and receiving non-clinical assistance to achieve long-term recovery from addiction challenges. Peer Recovery Support (PRS) is an active member of the Harbor Light clinical team and provides peer support to Safe Harbor and residential substance use/co-occurring disorder clients. Under supervision of the Safe Harbor Program Director, the PRS will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information, treatment services coordination, and peer support. The PRS performs a wide range of tasks, assisting peers in obtaining prompt access to care and substance use disorder treatment services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
- Certified as a Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) or clearly defined work plan to obtain such status within 30-days of employment
- Self-identified as a person who has direct personal experience living in recovery from substance use/co-occurring disorder
- Have significant experience (36-months minimum) working on his/her own recovery and an ability to manage his/her own wellness
- Have significant experience working on his/her own recovery and an ability to manage his/her own wellness
- Be willing to publicly identify as a person living in recovery for the purposes of educating, role modeling, and providing hope to others about the reality of recovery
- Ability to effectively present information one-on-one, with co-workers, and groups
- Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized substance abuse and mental health processes
- Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to use community resources necessary for independent living and ability to teach those skills to other individuals with substance use/co-occurring disorder
- Must have ability to understand and carry out written, verbal, and/or demonstrated instructions
- Practice good telephone etiquette in dealing with clients, staff and community members
- Able to work alone and as part of a team
- Proficient personal computer skills including e-mail, internet, word processing, spreadsheet, etc.
- Valid Michigan Chauffeur License and approved by The Salvation Army MVR
- T.B. test and police clearance required
REPORTS TO: Safe Harbor Program Director
JOB DUTIES:
Using a formal goal setting process, the Peer Recovery Coach will:
- Assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery through the use of one-to-one and group sessions.
- Assist clients in determining the steps he/she needs to take in order to gain access to treatment services, and support the client with identifying and adequately addressing barriers.
- Assist clients in locating, joining and finding means to participate in self-help/support groups such as NA, AA and Celebrate Recovery.
- Model and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and groups.
Using their recovery experience, the Peer Recovery Coach will:
- Teach and role model the value of every individual’s recovery experience.
- Assist the client in identifying possible barriers and directing client to community resources available to support self-sufficiency and social detriments of health outcomes.
- Assist client in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy.
Professional responsibilities include:
- Establish and maintain professional and timely documentation in the electronic medical records system. The PRC is responsible for his/her own documentation and is expected to review, correct, and seek assistance to ensure compliance.
- The PRS will maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in substance use disorder and co-occurring disorders by reading relevant materials and participating in continuing education seminars, webinars and other in-service training when offered.
- The PRS will provide transportation coordination and drive as needed to assist clients with prompt access to care and SUD treatment services.
· Understand and work within The Salvation Army’s mission and code of ethics.
· Establish and maintain an excellent working knowledge of the Harbor Light Policies and Procedures.
· Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
· HIPAA - Level 2 access to Clinical Records.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to operate a mid-sized motor vehicle.
- Ability to lift 20 pounds.
- The work is primarily sedentary.
- The ability to hear and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
- Ability to use a computer keyboard and or handwrite.
Job Type: Full-time
