The Director of Simulation Experiences, reporting directly to the Chairperson for the Department of Nursing, is the manager of the clinical skills laboratory and works with staff to provide simulation activities for the Department of Nursing and interdisciplinary teams. The Director works withs staff to evaluate and tutor/coach students referred to the lab for academic and clinical skills support. The Director oversees the maintenance and ordering of all durable and disposable medical supplies and biomedical equipment required for the smooth running of the clinical skills lab.

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

Managerial Role:

  • Oversees the day-to-day functioning of the nursing lab for undergraduate and graduate experiences.
  • Manages the full time staff in the lab; Supervises Graduate Assistants and adjuncts assigned to the lab.
  • Maintains adequate support within the lab including interviewing and hiring of adjunct faculty and graduate assistants.
  • Delegates set up and break down of lab activities during the day and evening.
  • Acts as the Chairperson of the simulation committee: oversees the simulation program and its continued growth
  • Orients new faculty and supports current faculty to the use of simulation to meet student learning outcomes and the projection/recording equipment used in the lab.
  • Works with faculty to develop high quality intensive simulations.
  • Collaborates with faculty on the simulation task force committee to develop the pre-work and post-work to enhance the learning from the simulation experience.
  • Acts as the primary contact regarding simulations experiences for allstudents (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, university administration, and the public (student applicants, parents, practitioners, and educators).
  • Maintains master lab schedule for university-wide distribution.
  • Maintains an inventory of durable and disposable medical/nursing supplies; Reorders supplies as needed after consulting with the faculty as to specific needs.
  • Serves as a permanent member of the department budget committee.
  • Maintains and presents the annual budget to the Chairperson; presents all supply orders and major financial costs incurred by the lab to the Chairperson for approval
  • Maintains a small reference area for in-lab use by students.
  • Obtains American Heart Association BLS instructor certification and offers faculty recertification programs every two years and as needed.
  • Maintains an on-going, comprehensive, log of undergraduate and graduate student and faculty activities in the lab.
  • Collaborates with other university departments to coordinate lab and simulation activities.

Director Role:

  • Collects, analyzes and tracks statistical data with respect to simulation sessions, such as: student and faculty responses/concerns, anticipated content needs, student outcomes as a result of participation in scenarios, and more.
  • Remains current with available technologies and other lab experiences by attending outside education seminars and programs related to nursing education and the use of simulation in the educational setting. Networks with lab directors at other colleges and universities.
  • Applies pedagogically sound principles of evaluation (authentic, norm-referenced, criterion referenced) with respect to students' progress and on-going learning needs.
  • Meets with students as requested through faculty referral for one-on-one or group tutoring or skill support and supervision. Generates reports related to student progress to the referring faculty member, with a copy to the Department Chair (on an as needed or requested basis), and a copy to the student file.
  • Coordinates clinical make-up opportunities using ATI simulations or other options.
  • Maintains a commitment to privacy and confidentiality related to students' issues.
  • Assists the chair with student tracking related to NCLEX preparation and results.

Simulation Facilitator Role:

  • Develops/co-develops simulation scenarios with faculty with a focus on multiple, specific content areas.
  • Facilitates simulation scenarios with either a lab assistant or faculty member.
  • Facilitates the simulation observation area and participates in post simulation debriefing sessions between students and facilitator.
  • Attend one national simulation conference per year.

Teaching Role:

  • Teach 4- 8 credits per year (12-month period) as needed by the department
  • Remediates Dimensional Analysis, prepares and administers exams and reports to faculty on student progression
  • Complete an annual simulation? report for the department
  • Creates a classroom, laboratory or clinical setting that develops critical thinking in students
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with faculty colleagues
  • Maintains the appropriate credentials or license required for the position
  • Assesses and evaluation of student learning outcomes

Job Requirements:


Education & Experience

  • A Master's Degree in nursing required
  • RN licensure in the State of Connecticut; this license must be valid and in good standing
  • A minimum of three years of full-time nursing practice in a medical surgical or critical care environment is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Up to date record of all immunizations required by the State and organization required
  • Prior experience as lab director or coordinator is preferred.
  • Prior experience in teaching at the clinical or college level is preferred. Knowledge of and experience with simulation pedagogy preferred.
  • Prior experience with simulation use in nursing education preferred.

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, may include evening hours
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills; Ability to make pedagogically sound decisions with respect to: students' learning needs and progress, instructional approaches to students who participate in lab experiences.
  • Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
  • Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed.
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents
  • Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to engage positively and work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the University professionally to the public
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner
  • Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population

Work Environment: The role of the Nursing Simulation Lab Director requires the applicant to stand and walk for several hours during the day. Some of this standing may be at the bedside for extended periods of time while observing student activities. They may also be required to lift objects of up to 50 lbs (supplies, chairs, mannequins' simulators, etc.) although assistance from facilities is available as needed. The director should consider the bedside activities to be similar to those encountered in a true clinical setting. The noise levels in the lab are fairly well controlled but are consistent with that of an interactive classroom setting. The lab is air-conditioned during the summer months.
