Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of Mental Wellbeing is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of comprehensive mental wellbeing program services at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College. The Director will provide one-on-one counseling services for students, as well as crisis intervention as needed. The Director will also design activities to facilitate the mental and emotional well-being of students, thereby improving retention and academic success, coordinating mental health programming on campus; including educational outreach, gatekeeper trainings, evidence-based interventions to increase help-seeking, awareness campaigns, etc.

Essential Job Duties:
Direct Therapy Services – 50%
  • Provide individual and group counseling and assessment services to students
  • Maintain case management plans for students receiving counseling services
  • Develop short-term intervention strategies for students seeking solutions for mental health, personal, academic or other concerns
  • Provide crisis intervention services for students when needed
  • Refer students to appropriate on-campus or off-campus resources/agencies
  • Maintain accurate records and confidentiality
Prevention, Education, & Outreach – 25%
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and oversee programming/intervention targeting needs identified by assessment of trends including, but not limited to, Hope Fest, RU OK? Day, Pop-Up for Mental Health events, and therapy dog visits
  • Develop and implement outreach programs for high risk students (i.e., non-traditional students, women, minorities, freshman and residential students)
  • Provide education and advocacy regarding mental health issues to students, faculty, and staff
  • Provide skills development workshops and personal growth groups for students Collaborate with academic programs to encourage co-curricular engagement in programming
  • Promote collaborative efforts with campus departments to enhance awareness of student issues and to provide support to students in need
Administrative – 25%
  • Gather data in order to assess effectiveness of services and identify trends in campus mental health and programming needs
  • Network with outside agencies such as ADAMHS, Therapy Dogs International, Hopewell Health Centers, etc. to ensure quality of services at the university
  • Cultivate and coordinate off campus relationships, resources and services to promote the departmental and university-wide mission
  • Serve as a member of the Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment Team
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Sensitivity to the challenges of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing student services including needs assessment techniques, quality service standards, alternate delivery systems and customer satisfaction evaluation techniques.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint operations.
  • Using logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas in a variety of methods so others will understand.
  • The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to come up with logical answers.
  • Knowledge of clinical records maintenance.
  • Crisis intervention and demonstrated appropriate and effective crisis intervention skills and techniques.
  • Knowledge of current mental health issues, including, but not limited to stress management, reproductive health, mental health, substance abuse and recovery.
  • Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and diplomacy
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards of licensed professionals.
  • Knowledge of mental health promotion and advocacy techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of mental health counseling, training and supervision.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based strategies and methods to enhance mental health of students.
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field (Social Work, Psychology, Behavioral Sciences and/or Education); Masters preferred.
  • Current Ohio License (Licensed Social Worker or Licensed Professional Counselor); actively working toward independent licensure preferred
  • Ability to complete annual updated training to maintain certification.
  • Approximately 2-3 years prior related experience providing counseling and crisis intervention
  • Experience preferred in project management, budget management, and grant management
  • Higher education experience preferred.
