Essential Job Functions
The Director of Creative Services will support all App State Athletics efforts to build brand affinity for Mountaineer programs, to increase and enhance the strategic initiatives established by the external units. The position will focus on the creation of social motion and still graphics to tell stories, in addition to supporting other digital and printed materials for all 17 varsity sports.

Responsibilities include:
  • Produce still and motion graphics for digital platforms including, but not limited to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to tell stories and highlight successes of App State Athletics.
  • Create graphics and images for use on appstatesports.com and other owned-digital platforms.
  • Support in the creation of designs for a variety of mediums, marketing collateral, social media, print materials, advertisements, digital design elements, templates, and email etc., within the established brand identity.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining creative calendar to assist with production timelines and scheduling.
  • Work closely with the Marketing, Strategic Communications, Sports Productions, and associated external units on design assignments, from initial concept to completion.
  • Provide design support to all groups within the Athletics department.
  • Maintain quality control of content and support design strategy and execution.
  • Inspect proofs for accuracy and adherence to appropriate production standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.


The athletic program at Appalachian State University operates on the premise that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the institution’s overall program of education. Priority is given to high standards of both academic and athletic quality — the goal being the complete development of the student-athlete.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited 4-year institution plus 2-4 years of graphic design experience.
  • High proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
  • Strong knowledge and skill in typography, color theory, current trends and best practices.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2-4 years of graphic design experience within a collegiate athletic department (intern/full-time).
  • Experience and skill in Adobe After Effects and motion graphics.
  • Photography and photo editing experience.

Communication-Written: Independently assimilates and composes written materials to use in a variety of communication outlets; edits documents to ensure accuracy in content and form; drafts communications for final release.
