JOB SUMMARY: The Mechanic will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light and heavy-duty equipment, facilities, and vehicles ensuring that Hawaiian Earth Products, Ltd. receives high quality repairs at reasonable costs. Experience with farm equipment, tractor and trailers is a plus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Test, Service, and Repair Vehicles and Equipment:
  • Operate diagnostic instruments; hand, electric, and air driven tools
  • Repair brakes, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, air, exhaust, and chassis
  • Provide emergency field assistance and repair to disabled equipment and vehicles
  • Cut and weld metal; fabricate parts, frames, and related items
  • Provide Preventive Maintenance:
  • Test and adjust or replace parts
  • Schedule preventive maintenance
  • Analyze and inspect equipment and vehicles
  • Determine most cost-effective maintenance or repair
  • Purchase parts and supplies for repair and maintenance
  • Assist in budget development to provide adequate inventory
  • Assist preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and equipment
  • Provide technical support to staff members and contractors.
  • Fill out daily summary reports, work order and repair orders.
  • Work reasonable overtime as required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of experience in a diesel mechanic position
  • Completion of a diesel mechanic training/certification program
  • A combination of equivalent experience and education

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability

to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures; Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures; Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.
  • Materials and tools of the automotive mechanic trade; operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light- and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles; occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work; principles of gasoline and diesel engines; pneumatic, hydraulic and alternate fueled vehicle systems.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, interpret and evaluate problems and provide practical, cost effective solutions; ability to juggle multiple priorities; ability to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, contractors and the general public, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, organize and monitor activities according to priorities, established schedules and deadlines.
  • Ability to apply common sense and good judgment to every day situations; ability to see all sides of an issue and use good judgment and common sense to effect win/win solutions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Hawaii State Driver's License.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.

  • Work involves walking, standing sitting, and stooping.

  • Mechanic communicates orally with others one-to-one both in person and over the telephone to clarify vehicle and equipment problems; they also communicate orally with others in a group setting when conducting and participating in safety meetings or new equipment training.
  • Mechanic learns new, job-related material through oral instruction in an on-the-job setting, as when receiving training from vendors on new equipment. To ensure that staff and equipment are operating within state and federal standards and regulations,
  • Mechanic may sit for extended periods of time with the ability to move about at will. They must be able to hear alarms and other auditory warnings, such as low air alarms and vehicle or equipment noise during road testing.
  • When road testing vehicles, Mechanic make fine, highly controlled muscular movements and coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
  • When communicating with others via e-mail or preparing performance evaluations, Mechanic operates office equipment requiring repetitive arm/hand movements.
  • When inspecting repairs or checking completed equipment, Mechanic climbs vehicle steps.
  • Mechanic climbs over and under rough or uneven surfaces when inspecting equipment.
