For 10-months, DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps Members serve full-time to create positive youth development opportunities in schools and local agencies throughout Western MA. They build relationships with young people and support them in developing skills, connection, and confidence in themselves as learners. They experience personal and professional growth through on-site service, workshops, and team service projects.
DIAL/SELF Members:
- Develop skills working with youth, schools, and community nonprofits.
- Build relationships and community through weekly development workshops and collaborative service projects.
- Pay for college using the $6,895 Education Award.
- Earn a $17,800 stipend.
- Receive free health insurance and child care financial assistance.
Candidates select from a variety of sites based on their interests, such as:
- Develop creative approaches for goal setting, self expression, and resource connection.
- Support learning in public and alternative schools.
- Create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth.
- Cultivate a fun educational atmosphere at drop-in resource centers and after-school organizations.
- Encourage music and arts education.
- Foster restorative relationships and social-emotional skills with youth at schools.
The DIAL/SELF AmeriCorps Program (DSAP) has three core elements:
- On-site youth work at a local school or nonprofit.
- Team service project in collaboration with youth and community.
- Weekly training and reflection to build youth work skills and increase knowledge of different learning styles, social justice issues, arts integration, motivational interviewing, asset-based community development, group dynamics and facilitation.

- Earn a compensation package worth over $24k, including personal/sick days. Package includes a $17k Stipend and a $7k Education Award after successful completion of service. The Education Award can be used to pay for pre-existing student loans or future education costs.

- Gain practical experience and build leadership skills that transfer across careers and vocations, particularly those related to education, youth work, the arts, social justice, nonprofits, social work, and community building.

- Participate in a supportive learning community that challenges members to build on their strengths and put their values into practice.
Members must be at least 18 years old, a US citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident, and have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency. Youth work experience is recommended, but not required. Some work history is necessary. Because part of the region is rural, it is highly beneficial to have a driver’s license with access to reliable transportation.
