Washington College’s Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience seeks applicants for the position of Deputy Director. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position.

The interdisciplinary Starr Center is dedicated to fostering innovative approaches to American history and culture at the local and national levels. Our current programs include a major digital humanities project on African American history (in partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and others); oral history; a book award; visiting fellowships; a new civic engagement program, and a myriad of hands-on opportunities in public history, humanities, and civic engagement for undergraduates.

Reporting directly to the Starr Center Director, the Deputy Director is a key member of the Center’s leadership team, which also includes the Director of Civic Engagement. The Deputy Director plays an important role in planning, leading, and administering the Center’s public programs, visiting fellowships, and summer programs, in coordination with other staff. The Deputy Director will have opportunities to initiate and lead student internship projects, trips, and other programs.

A bachelor’s degree and a strong background in American history/culture are required. At least three years of professional experience in education, public history/humanities, and/or nonprofit management; and/or an advanced degree in a relevant field; are also desired.

Washington College is a small liberal-arts institution that emphasizes close student/faculty collaboration, civic engagement, and experiential learning. Established in 1782, it is the nation’s tenth-oldest college and the first one chartered in the newly independent United States. The college is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a region rich in American history, approximately 90 minutes from Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
