The Office of State Tax Commissioner in Bismarck is seeking a driven and service-focused individual to become the next Customer Service Specialist in the Registration Section. An ideal candidate has a strong motivation to deliver consistent results in a high-functioning team environment while respecting all, challenging themselves to provide excellent customer service, and helping innovate solutions to promote compliance with North Dakota Tax laws.

Hiring Range and Working Hours: The hiring salary for this position will be $3000 - $3400 per month. Business hours and flexible hours available. This position is eligible for telework on a rotating basis, after completion of a training period.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires high school diploma or GED and two years of related work experience. Qualifying work experience would normally include receiving or analyzing information, determining available solutions, and assisting or directing customers in implementing and completing necessary steps to resolve issues or satisfy inquiries.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College coursework in accounting, bookkeeping or auditing
  • Experience providing customer service over the phone, handling complaints, and preparing written correspondence requesting information or explaining a decision
  • Experience working with electronic applications or other online systems
  • Experience in interpreting, applying, and enforcing guidelines, laws, rules, regulations, or policies

Summary of Work


As a Customer Service Specialist in the Registration section you will be part of a development driven team environment. Registration is a primary source of contact for taxpayers and duties include staffing reception area and assisting taxpayers, whether by phone, mail, email, or walk-in assistance. Registration is often the first point of contact for new businesses. Registration provides primary customer assistance on our online portal, TAP, assists employers with questions relating to Income Tax Withholding, and reviews and approves applications for North Dakota Sales and Use, and Withholding tax accounts. Registration is responsible for processing mail that is returned as undelivered from the post office, assisting taxpayers with requests, determining the appropriate action for changes based on a request, and approving sales tax refund requests for Canadian residents. As part of our ultimate goal as a section, Registration assists with special projects such as outbound courtesy calls to taxpayers who have a delinquent return to file and participation in compliance projects as time allows.
