The Position

Custodians provide care and cleaning for assigned areas in and around County buildings, offices, and other facilities.

NOTE: Applicants for the position of Custodian must be willing to flex from day to night shift (or vice versa) when there is a departmental need to do so. Advance notice of at least 14 days will be provided before any schedule changes.

The Recruitment Process:

1. Applications will be accepted on-line until 5:00 PM on MARCH 10, 2023.

2. Applications will be screened for minimum qualifications and supplemental responses scored by subject matter experts the week of March 13, 2023. The most qualified applicants from the scoring of the supplemental questions will be invited for an Oral Panel Interview.

3. Oral Panel Interviews are tentatively scheduled to take place the week of March 27, 2023. Only the most qualified candidates from the interview process will be placed on the eligibility list and may be considered to fill positions for up to one year.

The Human Resources Department reserves the right to change the recruitment process at any time.

Example of Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Clean and sanitize rest room fixtures including sinks, urinals and toilets, using appropriate cleaning materials and supplies and replenish restroom supplies to ensure restrooms are clean, stocked and operational; sweep, dust and/or wet mop floors in assigned facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary and attractive work environment for County staff and the general public; empty, clean and sanitize waste receptacles to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive work environment; clean, dust and polish furniture, woodwork and cabinets to maintain a sanitary and attractive work environment; wash windows and walls as needed to maintain a clean and attractive work environment; use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools: buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture; strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors to provide a clean and safe environment; vacuum, shampoo and spot clean carpets to help maintain the life of the product and provide for an attractive work environment; clean and polish water fountains to ensure a sanitary, safe and attractive work environment; use keys and/or alarm codes to secure entrance doors to buildings, windows and interior doors to provide a safe and secure work environment for County staff and the general public; safely operate cars, trucks, small utility vehicles, vans, and/or pallet jacks needed to perform required custodian tasks; read, write and understand the English language to comprehend and complete assigned tasks; read and understand product directions and warnings and operational manual to safely complete assignments; and, communicate in an understandable manner with supervisor, fellow custodians and others encountered while completing assignment.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Sanitation and safety measures in the operating, cleaning, and care of equipment and work areas used in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

SKILL TO:

Properly use and/or apply various cleaning solutions (i.e., polishes, disinfectants, stain removers, degreasers, window cleaners, etc.) used in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Use manual and/or electric cleaning equipment (i.e., vacuums, buffers, polishers, pressure washers, and blowers, etc.) to maintain building interiors and/or exteriors.

Use various cleaning and safety tools (i.e., scrapers, scrub brushes, mops, buckets, ladders, sponges, untreated cloths, rubber gloves, safety goggles, aprons, etc.) needed to maintain building interiors and/or exteriors.

Safely operate cars, trucks, small utility vehicles, vans, and/or pallet jacks needed to perform required custodial tasks.

Safely lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (i.e., cleaning supplies, trash receptacles, recycling materials, waste materials, small office furniture, office supplies, etc.) required to properly perform assigned tasks.

Read, write and understand the English language.

Read and understand product directions and warnings and equipment operational manuals.

Communicate well with supervisors and others in the maintenance of building interiors.

ABILITY TO:

Prioritize regular duties and work requests to ensure the completion of assignments.

Kneel, reach, stand, bend, stoop, twist, hand dexterity, and/or lift 50 pounds in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Move limbs and/or fingers easily to perform manual functions in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Follow directions (verbal or written) in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Focus attention on details in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Work as a member of a team in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Maintain good attendance and punctuality in the maintenance of building interiors and/or exteriors.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience:
One year of experience performing general custodial or cleaning work.

Education:
Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

License or Certificate*:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

  • Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e., active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

Special Qualifications:
Persons employed in this class must be willing to work days, evenings, and nights.
