The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) supports the Department by acquiring, distributing, installing and maintaining Local Area Networks, personal computers, mainframe computers, software, and data communications networks. ITSD also plans and coordinates the implementation of advanced technology. ITSD is seeking for a candidate to work in the title of Computer Specialist Software for design, implement, maintain and support IT application re-engineering.

The selected candidate will:

  • Manage and respond to ServiceNow incident reports: review the ticket and make any necessary corrections. Work ticket to resolution. Reassign/escalate to the correct group when needed,
in a manner that improves the response time between the opening of the ticket and IT’s response to the call.
  • Install, configure, and test computer hardware/software in a network or stand-alone environment.
  • Coordinate with co-workers to assist management and users by disseminating relevant and timely information on an issue.
  • Keep supervisors aware of existing and potential issues.
  • Document procedures to implement solutions and mitigate problems.
  • Collaborate with other ITB units to resolve incidents affecting users throughout the city.
  • Provide support to users by utilizing programs such as Windows Active Directory and Remote Desktop tools to assist in troubleshooting, identifying, and resolving software/hardware-related
issues.
Ability to use network administration tools to troubleshoot and fix issues relating to folder access, security, workstation related issues (example, joining to the domain, security groups,
printer policy, etc.)
  • Manage and Coordinate with Dell, the Dell Tech Direct platform, a software platform to manage all warranty repair/exchange on NYPD Dell Equipment.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned by Executive Leadership of the Information Technology Bureau.

Minimum Qual Requirements

(1) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by twenty-four (24) semester credits in computer science or a related computer field and two (2) years of satisfactory full-time software experience in designing, programming, debugging, maintaining, implementing, and enhancing computer software applications, systems programming, systems analysis and design, data communication software, or database design and programming, including one year in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project; or
(2) A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six (6) years of full-time satisfactory software experience as described in “1" above, including one year in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project; or
(3) A satisfactory combination of education and experience that is equivalent to (1) or (2) above. College education may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience in (2) above on the basis that sixty (60) semester credits from an accredited college is equated to one year of experience. A masters degree in computer science or a related computer field may be substituted for one year of the required experience in (1) or (2) above. However, all candidates must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, plus at least one (1) year of satisfactory full-time software experience in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project.
NOTE: In order to have your experience accepted as Project Leader or Major Contributor experience, you must explain in detail how your experience qualifies you as a project leader or as a major contributor. Experience in computer operations, technical support, quality assurance (QA), hardware installation, help desk, or as an end user will not be accepted for meeting the minimum qualification
requirements.
Special Note
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level IV, in addition to the Qualification Requirements stated above, individuals must have one year of satisfactory experience in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project in data administration, database management systems, operating systems, data communications systems, capacity planning, and/or on-line applications programming.

Preferred Skills

  • Some knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP and LAN/WAN
  • Windows 10, Microsoft SQL 2016/2016/2019, Windows Server 2012/2016/2019, MS Office 2010/2013/2016Strong knowledge of MS Office products, specifically Excel, Access, and Word
  • Strong customer service experience and skills; courteous telephone manner
  • ITSM Tooling such as ServiceNow
