Summary:
This Component and System Modeling Manager will lead a team responsible for creating, developing maintaining and improving modeling simulation and data management software applications to support new product and technology development projects in Trane Technologies, and lead strategic development of modeling and simulation environment to 3-5 years along the multiple business unit roadmaps. The role will also support the use of these applications to troubleshoot, analyze and offer solutions to performance & reliability problems of HVAC components & systems in the lab or field. The candidate must be highly motivated and be able to lead a team of employees in the development and implementation of new processes, tools, and procedures that meet Trane’s modeling and simulation strategic goals.

Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading a diverse group of engineers in component and system modeling and simulation disciplines

  • Responsible for driving improvements to component and system modeling tools and simulation capabilities to impact new technology development and new product development projects and processes

  • Lead the strategic develop of Component and System Modeling and Simulation capabilities and tools, including refrigeration system, electrical system and other sub-systems for HVAC & R products

  • Lead the integration of component and system modeling and simulations in various areas including meta-modeling, machine learning and Artificial Intelligence towards Model Based System Engineering

  • Lead the discussions among multiple business unit along their roadmaps and contribute to Modeling and Simulation roadmap in response.

  • Bridge the communication and interactions among Modeling and Simulation areas for: HVAC system modeling, controls and connect to Machine learning platform.

  • Bridge the internal development work with broader external development, including Academy, DoE fundings, external business partners, etc.

  • Lead the activities to improve, standardize, and maintain existing 1D component and system modeling tools for multiple HVAC & R systems

  • Work as component model Subject Matter Expert to lead the development and discussion in related project development from multiple business units

  • Well understand lab tests and enhance modeling and simulation processes, also capable of lead the lab test design for model validation purpose

  • Provide guidance and leadership to designers, lab technicians and other team members in modeling context

  • Scan and screen new technologies in HVAC&R in modeling and simulation context

  • Integrate closely with various functional team members collaborating while enhancing deploy new modeling and simulation methodologies and tools to speed product to market

  • Administer talent management programs and processes to ensure that tools are being used to create value across the organization.

  • Coordinate external collaborations for general modeling and simulation fields around the global.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical (thermal) Engineering, PhD is a plus to this position.

  • 10~15 years experience in air-conditioning / HVAC system product design and modeling

  • Familiar with popular industrial level modeling and simulation tools and platforms, with at least 5 years experiences to use or develop modeling and simulation related tools

  • Strong planning, problem analysis and resolution, and organizational skills

  • Able to make timely decision in stressful situations

  • Ability to listen to customers and translate into accurate, actionable specifications

  • Must be team-oriented with strong leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to effectively adapt to change (environment, requirements, roles, Objectives)

Essential Skills or Knowledge Required:

  • Expertise in the thermal sciences (thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics), gained preferably from experience with HVAC components & systems

  • Familiar with air conditioning products, such as Residential Split Systems, Commercial Chillers, Rooftops, Air Handlers and Transport Refrigeration

  • Experience in air conditioning system and component design and optimization

  • Familiar with commercial tools such as: Modelica, Matlab, Julia, etc.

  • Programming capability desirable. Experience with Fortran, Visual Basic (VBA), C++/C# and Python for understanding existing codes as well as developing new component models in modern languages/scripting platforms

  • Experience in problem formulation & solution using numerical methods via commercial solvers & custom code required

  • Project management skills are highly preferred

  • Experts in Modeling and Simulation methodologies, including different type of HVAC components and systems: heat exchangers, compressors, fans, as well as Chillers, VRF, etc; including Steady state modeling and Transient modeling; also understand the connection between 1D and 3D modeling and simulations

Base Salary for this position is $103,000-$215,000

Additional Compensation: Total compensation for this role also will include an incentive plan.
