Description of Work Unit
This work unit exists to produce requested laboratory data on blood, tissue and body fluids in a timely and efficient manner to support research and to guide clinicians, referring veterinarians and students in the diagnosis and treatment of varied and numerous species of animals.

Position Summary
The laboratory technician is responsible for clinical laboratory sample examinations including hematology, urinalysis, chemical analysis, coagulation testing, blood banking and fluid analysis on veterinary specimens. The technician may answer clinician questions, in-person and by phone, regarding results and accession samples as they arrive. Maintaining cleanliness and stocking of supplies is also required. This job does not involve routine vet tech work or animal handling. This is a 9 month, temporary position.

Position Minimum Qualifications
Responsible individual, capable of working independently and learning quickly.
Familiarity with samples required for commonly performed hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, biochemistry, and blood banking
Familiarity with basic quality assurance/quality control processes
Ability to perform one or more of the following:
  • CBC with manual differential on veterinary patients
  • Urinalysis with microscopy
  • Coagulation testing (PT, PTT, FDP, D-Dimers, antithrombin 3, quantitative fibrinogen) via
automated or manual methods
  • Blood Banking methods including cross-match, blood, type, coombs test, etc.
  • Biochemistry analysis using automated methods[M1]

[M1]This phrasing is hard for me to parse as a minimum requirement. I think the issue is ‘familiarity with’ followed by ‘ability to perform’. What do you think about this change?

Preferred Qualifications
Clinical laboratory experience, veterinary technician or medical technology training preferred.

Duty/Responsibility
Perform routine and non-routine tests and procedures in the clinical pathology lab. Operate independently in performing the full scope of non-routine tests and procedures. Obtain and report laboratory results on specimens received for chemistry analysis, complete blood counts, urinalysis, fluid analysis and others by operating the appropriate lab instruments and/or testing by manual methods. Use laboratory analyzers and attend appropriate training necessary for ongoing competent use. Verify test results by correlating with other laboratory data and quality control and by evaluating and reporting the specimen quality regarding test limitations, physical characteristics, age of sample, method utilized to obtain sample, etc. Modifies lab or testing procedures as necessary to gain needed results.

Laboratory sample verification and charging/sample integrity

Duty/Responsibility
Ensures sample submitted is labeled appropriately and matches paperwork submitted regarding sample ID and test(s) requested. Expedites sample testing by charging for the ordered tests through the hospital information system software and labeling the samples using the barcode software and slide labeling system. Initiates communication with clinician and/or student if sample received is improperly labeled. Verifies the receipt of quality specimens for clinical pathology testing; including correct labels, correct paperwork, correct sample type, sample quality and sample quantity. Knowledge of what type of sample is needed for each test is essential, as well as knowledge of the different types of anticoagulants used in blood collection which fit the testing protocols. This position must use their judgment and apply this knowledge in varying circumstances to expedite getting the test results to the clinician.

Assure quality results by implementing and evaluating a calibration and quality control program and by taking necessary appropriate corrective action. Execute calibrations and maintenance to maintain instruments and prevent untimely instrument malfunction.
