Job description

The Office of Educator Preparation ( OEP ) in the Graduate School of Education ( GSE ) coordinates the clinical placements of teacher candidates. As part of their overall teacher education, graduate students engage in a year-long residency in a partner school or district. During the residency year, Resident Teachers will complete coursework while co-teaching alongside a partner district Mentor Teacher. Clinical Experience Coaches are the face of UB, GSE, OEP, and the UB Teacher Residency program with our residency school sites. Within their purview, CECs connect with the schools and the communities in which they are located to cultivate a rapport that is mutually beneficial to both the residency school site and the University at Buffalo. CECs facilitate the activation of much of the theory from coursework into practical applications as students progress through residency. They accomplish this through the preparation and implementation of effective curriculum for small cohorts of resident teachers during their residency experiences in the teacher education program.
Clinical Experience Coaches have three primary roles:
  • Supporting Resident-Mentor Pairs in their Co-teaching Relationship
  • Supporting School Partnerships
  • Serving as Expert Teacher Leaders

Responsibilities include:
  • Develop relationships and maintain regular communication with Mentor Teachers (MTs) and school leaders to support the residency year experience
  • Facilitate sessions with MTs and Resident Teachers (RT) during pre-residency professional learning workshops related to best practices and protocols for MT, Resident Teacher, and CEC
  • Attend regular program meetings to support the residents’ overall experience in the classroom
  • Engage in individual activity that fosters community within the cohort and strengthens our relationships with the schools
  • Observe residents and resident-mentor pairs at regular intervals throughout the residency year and while the resident has assumed various roles in the classroom
  • Provide systematic, data-based assessments of teaching and coaching throughout residency
  • Participate in candidate interviews during the resident selection process

Commitment (12 months)
  • Conduct monthly observations
  • Attend monthly meetings with OEP and UBTR program team
  • Facilitate one monthly small-group meeting of residents
  • Participate in consultations with MTs and RTs as needs arise
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and leading summer professional learning for mentors and residents

The Office of Educator Preparation has a long history of excellence, as well as a strong tradition of teaching and community engagement. Faculty and staff demonstrate a commitment to creating a collegial academic environment characterized by equity, social justice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an ethic of care.
