SeaKeepers enables the yachting community to take full advantage of their unique potential to advance marine sciences and raise awareness about global ocean issues.
About the Position:
The Citizen Science Associate will aid the Citizen Science Manager in the creation and maintenance of SeaKeepers’ oceanographic citizen science projects. The associate will be expected to help staff manage citizen science programs and provide help at cleanups and other activities that may take place on weekends.
Job Location:
SeaKeepers Headquarters, Coral Gables, FL USA
Schedule: Part-time position working 24 hours fixed schedule and up to 30 hrs/week at SeaKeepers Headquarters, as well as at remote locations or events as needed.
Compensation: $19 / hour
Direct Supervisor: Citizen Science Manager
Position Responsibilities:
- Manage relationships with participants and scientists for various citizen science projects.
- Analyze and interpret data from oceanographic projects.
- Help promote citizen science projects to the yachting community and general public.
- Research and provide pertinent insight concerning current marine science and environmental issues.
- Introduce and manage new SeaKeepers’ citizen science projects.
- Participate in citizen science and community outreach events, including beach cleanups.
- Represent the organization and interact professionally with volunteers as required for beach clean ups and other offsite activities.
- Collect data for analysis from field work or beach clean ups.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Degree in biology, ecology, GIS, or a related field
- Advanced knowledge of marine biology, oceanography, or a related field
- Experience in coding and interpreting data using coding software
- Excellent grammatical and spelling skills
- Excellent skills in preparing business correspondence with meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to work as part of a team and help as/when needed
- Excellent schedule management and communication skills
- Proficiency in office machines and office software including MSOffice (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) relational database and internet navigation software
PREFERRED EXPERIENCES/SKILLS:
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Comfort in and around boats and yachts
- Knowledge of South Florida marine ecosystems
- Content creation/social media experience

** PLEASE NOTE that the part-time position will be three full workdays. There is an opportunity to participate in SeaKeepers activities, such as tabling for yacht crew events or helping at beach cleanups, for an additional 6 hours per week. Total hours per week will not exceed a part-time schedule of 30 hrs.
